Hi Dave,

Excellent photographs of a great walk in a cracking walking area. Nice to see
the early orchids and the Alpaca.

Hi Ann!

Thanks for your reply!

You visited Autria in late May, our Schneeberg tour was on the 28th, and my
recent pictures are from April 25th, so about 5 weeks earlier. This is the time
when the weather gets warm and, consequently, most of the snow on high summits
is melting away. So, let´s wait for three more weeks to get a good comparison.
Today, when I write this, about 10 days later, there is much less snow up there
after a couple of really hot days and consequently rain up to the summit (which
softens the snow and maybe contributes even more to the melting process). If you
look at www.Schneeberg.tv, you will see that the summit station, where we left
and reentered the train, is nearly out after having been covered by a huge
cornice during winter.

Wishing you all the best now (and bright weather) for the coming weeks!

Helmut

Hi Maggie

Huge congratulations in not only finishing them in style but in also doing them
so fast. A wonderful day for your walk and some stunning shots of Pen. You are
the second Birketter I've heard of finishing on Pen, it's certainly a stunning
and remote top for completing on, especially as you got to start your second
round on the same walk!

In response to Freddie's comment on Picasa there are one or two of us in the OFC
who are daft enough to be doing or have done the Birketts, myself and John being
two of them. Although after many years I still have 191 tops to go and haven't
decided if I'll even attempt Pillar Rock. Someone even got an article in our
local paper a few years ago when he completed the round (minus Pillar Rock) so
clearly its a popular challenge that's just not got to Wainwright status yet.

To Tanya and Angie if you've done the Wainwrights then you are well on the way
to doing the Birketts and will already have walked over or by many of the
summits that count as Birketts. Sounds like a good excuse for heading to the
lakes to me, if one is needed. Mind if you don't like Mungrisdale Common its
unlikely you will enjoy the Shap Fells which are remote often pathless and have
snakes. As I'm sure Maggie will testify it is however a great way to get to
explore some of the parts of the lakes Wainwright doesn't touch although
sometimes you do think maybe Wainwright had the correct idea.

PS l knew John was the man for me on our first holiday to the lakes when it was
he who was standing their with the GPS and BB's almanac in the mist insisting
that we found the right bump for the true summit. BB and a broken leg have an
awful lot to do with why we're married.

Scafell Pike

   Hi all

Yesterday I decided to seize the day and climb Pen to complete my Birkett
Round (excluding Pillar Rock which is a rock climb and therefore I can't do it
under my own steam).

I started my walk from Brotherilkeld in Eskdale, ascended the Cowcove zigzags
and on into upper Eskdale. I accessed Pen from Little Narrowcove. The cove is a
wonderful place with dramatic rock scenery all around, and Pen is a great place
to linger with it's fine views and curious rocks.

I then took the north east ridge to Scafell Pike. Up until then I'd only met
one person, a fell runner, but as you can imagine on a Bank Holiday weekend it
was a busy scene on the Pike, much different to the two previous occasions I've
been there when I've had the place to myself for a while.

Beating a hasty retreat from the crowds I made my way over to Mickledore and
down to Cam Spout and the peace of Eskdale. Rather than returning the way I'd
come I crossed the River Esk and Great Moss and descended to Lingcove Bridge and
so back to Brotherilkeld. A wonderful mountain walk to end my Birkett Round,
pleased I saved it `til last.

I've really enjoyed the challenge of finding and walking all the Birkett tops.
I've found it a focused way to discover many new routes and places that make up
the variety of Lakeland walking.

Apologies there are more photos than usual but I wanted a full account of the
day. Hope you can find the time to take a look:

Hi Dave,

Excellent visiblity and lovely pictures - many of the views being familiar to me
in the meantime, seems to be your absolute favourite place.
Also good to see first orchids out - I´ve seen some over here a couple of days
ago - a photograph on my website on most recent day report.

Hi Paul

Wasn't the field behind the church open for parking? It was when I was there
in March at £3.00 for the day it seemed very reasonable and being so large
I'd have thought it would have solved the parking issues at the head of
Kentmere.

Hi Paul,

I knew I had to get there pretty early, so I set off earlier than normal and was
parked up next to the church before 7.30am, although there were a couple of cars
and a camper van there already before me.

A truly brilliant day and photos, and I can't think of a better top to achieve
your objective.
I echo what John says about Pillar Rock: when we climbed it years ago, we hired
a climbing guide who provided the equipment, roped us up and secured all the
belays, ensuring we were safe, then allowed us to climb it ourselves unaided. It
was very easy apart from the inevitable feeling of exposure and our descent was
largely by a simple abseil under his guidance.

Hi Dave,

A stunning day for your favourite walk. On this occasion, the tranquility of the
totally calm sea set the tone for your walk. It had all the signs and promises
of Spring, the little lambs (loved the sleepy one at the end), the early
orchids, the excellent close-up of the butterfly and the greening of the entire
area. The Alpaca was a handsome creature too.

Cheers

Hi Maggie,

Unbelievable difference between the remote quietness and beauty of the uppermost
Eskdale and the huge crouds on Scafell Pike summit. If I´d ever retrace my steps
to Scafell Pike, I´ll take this route.

You caught a brilliant day, my congratulations too for the final Birkett.

Hi Angela

What a lovely message, thanks so much. I love the story about you and John lol
:o)

Yes it's been quite an adventure, I've found plenty of great routes and places I
probably wouldn't otherwise have visited and ones I'll return to for
sure...along with ones I won't be returning to! Re the Shap Fells, I kept
putting them off but ended up enjoying then much more than I was expecting, as
others have been saying re Mungrisdale Common it's all about choosing the right
weather/conditions.

Thanks again Angela and good luck with the rest of yours.

Many thanks V&G, I was very pleased with my choice of last walk.

Thanks for the reassurance re Pillar Rock. I have done a little roped
scrambling and also some abseiling so I might be OK but I would feel it a
terrible waste of moneyy if I were to bottle out at the last minute! Still,
never say never...

Hi Helmut

Thanks for taking a look at my photos, that route up the south-east ridge of
Scafell Pike from Pen is an excellent one, I find it surprising that Wainwright
doesn't appear to show it, although he does show a route to Pen and into Little
Narrowcove. Still, I guess the advantage of that is that it remains quiet.

Thanks for the congratulations.

Hi Helmut

What a striking contast between the colours of the flowers and the white of the
mountain. Yellow and green seem to be the colour of spring so the purple orchid
really stood out in your set. I always look forward to your flower close ups,
they are always superb.

Many thanks it was a really memorable day. We've had a few doing the same route
that started with the bay being lit up with the clouds but on this occassion it
lasted the whole walk. By now Heathwaite will be a mass of cowslips and orchids.

I was over in the Lakes on Thursday making the most of the lovely

Brilliant walk, walked for over 5 hours without seeing a sole, until I
had I strange encounter on Birkett Fell, I'll let you read the journal

Hi Gary,

Great set of pics of my "backyard". Just one point - your photo of St Johns in
the Vale actually shows only a tiny bit of St Johns in the Vale in the
foreground. The bulk of the picture shows the Naddle Valley which is the valley
the A591 runs along on the far side of the High Rigg ridge.

Interesting account of your "rescue". The conditions looked so good it is
difficult to imagine how he got lost.

PS - I hope Keera gets to the standard you have trained Badger and Cleo. The
thought of my two regarding my stopping to take photographs as the cue to lie
down is a concept they don't understand at the moment! ;-)

Cheers

Hi Ann,

Whoops, looks like we'll miss the exhibition then. Ros and I went to the
motocross on Saturday and I went back again yesterday. Lovely blue skies
on day one, but colder and wetter (with a small snow shower) on day two. I
haven't been to motocross for over 30 years and very much enjoyed it. I
got some good photo's as well. We also bought a caravan recently, which is
stored at Aspatria, so we were out there Saturday afternoon messing about
with the awnings (yes, two, although one had a broken pole) and enjoying a
cup of coffee.

I was also down at Seascale on Thursday and Friday evenings, for a
rehearsal and concert with West Cumberland Choral Society. The next
concert is at Rosehill Theatre in a few weeks.

Cheers,

Dave

Hopefully the weather will be dry enough for me and the girls to get out
somewhere this week.

Hi Ann and Roger,

I seem to have missed the Floutern Tarn email, but it looks like a
delightful walk, despite the slightly cool weather. At least the wind
enables you to have some interesting shadows dancing across the fells.

It's also nice to see a new addition to the dog section of the OFC,
obviously enjoying her first outing, so here's to many more. The NT lady
in the car park was there when I visited a while back, and seemed
disappointed that I was already a member as well. The route you took was
similar to mine, except I missed the gate up onto the crag. Not to worry,
I'm sure it will be there next time I go.

Best wishes,

Hi Tanya,

Another wonderfully descriptive walk. Hopefully Mungrizedale common isn't
quite as bad as you make out, as it is still on my 'to do' list (as is
Armboth Fell). Carrock Beck and it's bridge are gorgeous, as I found out
when Paul Harrison and parked there a few months ago.

Hi Dave
Thanks for the comments :)
Others have liked it more than me so hopefully you will find something to like
about it.... Armboth Fell was more marshy...I did it in the winter so may be
better in summer (although actually being quite frozen was helpful for the rest
of the fells of High Tove, High Seat and Bleaberry Fell). Bell Crags looked much
nicer....

Hi Dave and Ros,

The poster on my web page suggests they will be running the exhibition till the
15th May so you should still have chance to visit this small, but enthusiastic,
exhibition.

All the best for your caravanning days. We owned one for many years (till the
kids got too big to fit in) and many a good time was had as we holidayed all
over the country.

Thanks for looking and commenting on all our photos.

Cheers
Roger

Hi All,

It's that time of year again and this will be the ninth year we have been
resident in Loweswater and been able to drive up the road to see the
"Hyacinthoides non-scripta" ~ bluebells ~ to you and I. Nine Spring seasons ...
doesn't time fly ?

We enjoyed a quick trip late on Sunday afternoon to Rannerdale with very few
people about despite the bank holiday. Two families were all we saw I think.

http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/

Pictures in the usual place, but bear in mind that the usual place will be a bit
quiet for a short while as we're off to the Scotltish islands of Tyree and Coll
tomorrow. Angie is "cottage-sitting" here in Loweswater while we are away so
hopefully you'll be entertained by her photos rather than ours.

Cheers

Hi Folks,

Just catching up with my posting.

Following some heavy rain here in Workington I took the girls to Stanley
Force in anticipation of the amount of water likely to be in the falls.
Eskdale was pretty dry though, but I haven't been to the falls for about
15 years, so it was still very enjoyable.

https://picasaweb.google.com/davidleslie501/StanleyForce30thApril2012

A day off for Ros, so we went on one of our favourite walks on the shores
of Dewentwater.

https://picasaweb.google.com/davidleslie501/Manesty3rdMay2012

I have been busy with the two choirs I am in, and the West Cumberland
Choral Society were performing in Seascale. As it was my fist time here
there was the opportunity for a few snaps.

https://picasaweb.google.com/davidleslie501/Seascale3rdMay2012

Over the weekend there was a motocross meeting at the local course. The
conditions during the two days were a bit changeable. Ros came on day 1,
but I went up for a few hours both days. Free entry for club events such
as this as well. If you're not into motorcycles/motocross then you might
not want to look at these albums.

Shortly after our last walk I started getting a few aches and pains in various
joints which indicates usually that I am having a bit of a "flare up" with the
Rheumatoid Arthritis. Normally the main joints affected are my elbows and wrists
but this time I was having problems with my feet. With this going on I didn't
want to push things too much so we settled for this walk along the canal and
through a local bluebell wood.
Pictures from the walk are now available to view on the webpage for those
wishing to do so.
Regards,
Dave

Hi Ann/Roger

Loved the shots from your trip to see the Rannerdale bluebells, sadly it looks
like it won't be this year that John and I get to see them.

Is it my imagination or are the bluebells looking better this year than they did
last year?

Enjoy your trip to Scotland at least it should be midge free at this time of
year.

I know Angie was looking forward to house-sitting or was it just to have a good
excuse for heading to the Lakes

Regards
Angela

Rannerdale Bluebells

Pictures in the usual place, but bear in mind that the usual place will be a
bit quiet for a short while as we're off to the Scotltish islands of Tyree and
Coll tomorrow. Angie is "cottage-sitting" here in Loweswater while we are away
so hopefully you'll be entertained by her photos rather than ours.

   Cheers

   Roger and Ann

Hi Gary

I have just enjoyed the pictures from your latest walk which was very similar to
one I did last September.

A great walk that as you experienced when the conditions are right allows you to
see most of the lakes in one walk.

Angela

I was over in the Lakes on Thursday making the most of the lovely
weather. Took Badger and Cleo for a wander over The Dodds from High Row.
Brilliant walk, walked for over 5 hours without seeing a sole, until I
had I strange encounter on Birkett Fell, I'll let you read the journal
to find out what that was! Enjoy .... [:)]
