Cambridge Film Festival 2004
It's a good job I enjoyed this, as I am already signed up for the UK
Premiere of its companion piece `Before Sunset' – the festival's
closing film. `Before Sunrise' is being shown as part of a festival
Linklater retrospective.
It's an unassuming dialogue heavy film that has plenty of riches to
offer beneath its simple structure. Two strangers (Ethan Hawke and
Julie Delpy) meet on a train, and acting on impulse, spend the day and
night together in Vienna. The couple manage to snatch an enchanting
few hours from the jaws of time, and we get to be reminded of all
magical possibilities we forego when we become wrapped up in the
relentless trudge of everyday life.
A great start to my festival experience.
