Cambridge Film Festival 2004
UK Premiere
I was impressed with Fontaine's `Comment j'ai tue mon pere' (2001),
and the excellent `Une Liaison Pornographie' (1999) (for which she was
the writer according to the CFF brochure): this latest offering is
equally impressive.
It's a slowly evolving psychological exploration of sexual fantasy and
the eternal complexities of relationships. Fanny Ardant is superb in
the lead role of a wife whose response to the discovery of her
husband's infidelity is unusual, to say the least. Fontaine carefully
builds up an intricate network of meanings that thankfully do not
insult the viewer by arriving at some bland resolution by the end of
the film.
Emmanuelle Beart is very good, and Gerard Depardieu is perfect in the
role of the husband.
