Whenever I first see Leonardo DiCaprio in a film, I think `He just
looks like a kid – he'll never be convincing in this role'. I usually
change my mind pretty rapidly.
And so it is with the Aviator. DiCaprio gives a tremendous
performance as the younger Howard Hughes; one that shows the maturity
and skill of the actor.
Of course, the real stamp of authority on the film is Scorsese's. The
shots are jubilantly flamboyant one moment - giving the film that
Scorsese energy; then pensive and quietly observant the next. It's a
style that perfectly marries flashy mainstream with more thoughtful
arthouse. Above all, you get a real sense that Scorsese is simply in
complete control – and loving every minute of it.
Great crash sequence too!
