A carefully controlled, intense, and utterly compelling film. Its
story of witchcraft in a 17th century Danish village is bleak but, in
its concentration on the moral struggles of its protagonists, truly
humane.
Wonderful photography, engaging performances and a minimalist script
make for a film that is as relevant now as when made during the Nazi
occupation of Denmark.
It's interesting how effective and shocking the torture scene is, even
in this day and age, especially since the camera almost entire avoids
the gruesome acts themselves. Instead, it concentrates its cold
analytical eye on those who watch the acts.
