Hello everyone,
Quick presentation : My name is Owen and I'm pretty much a film fanatic (which
is kind of
why I'm here). I have previously wanted to create an independent film ezine
myself, but I
thought for the moment it would be simpler to just write a few articles here.
Anyway I have just seen 3-Iron, a south-korean film written and directed by
Ki-duk Kim,
who also made "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring". Ki-duk Kim used to
be a
painter before taking up film-making not so long ago, I guess this explains how
visually
stunning his films are. Just like his paintings, each shot is sharp, vivid and
uses beautiful
ranges of colors.
3-Iron is the story of a young man, who breaks into peoples homes when they are
away
(on holiday for example), and temporarily lives these peoples lives, using their
clothes,
dishes, etc. But he would always takes care of everything: he cleans, mends
objects, and
performs various other chores.
Whilst staying in a married couples house, a woman - supposedly the wife -
catches the
young squatter in her house, she is bruised and has obviously been beaten by her
husband, she's living a disastrous marriage. She falls in love with Sun-hwa and
eventually
they run away. The film is about their emotional journey together in this busy
city of
theirs, where people are living their everyday lives, and when they aren't, the
two main
characters fill in.
The beauty of the film is that the two characters never, ever, talk. There are
no words. But
somehow the silence doesn't mean they aren't communicating, they just don't need
words
to understand each other. The director makes this silence bliss, soothing and
magnificent.
Anyway I would strongly advise 3-Iron.
