The mainstream doesn't always have to be insubstantial, painfully
predictable, and childish. 'In Her Shoes' has the plotting framework
of a thousand other Hollywood films, but it is unusual in taking the
time to let its characters breathe, and the kind of pace which permits
a better understanding of them.
Mind you, what do I know? I'm the kind of guy who is left cold by
the 'perfect figured' Cameron Diaz, and am far more attracted to the
more interesting and more desirably proportioned Toni Collette.
Also, I can't help liking a film which features some e.e. cummings
poetry.
And Shirley MacLaine is wonderful.
Enjoyable film.
