Unveiled Views

Synopsis: Whats life really like for women in the Islamic world? To
what extent is our opinion of them based on Western prejudice? The
author of this film hitchhiked from Barcelona to Pakistan and
portrayed the life of five remarkable women who challenge conventional
stereotypes. Alma clears landmines in Bosnia while Eren fights for
human rights in Turkey. In contrast, the Iranian director, Rakhshan;
Pakistani dancer, Nahid, and Moshgan, a poet from Afghanistan, all use
art to express their viewpoints.

Shame : a film from Pakistan on honor killing

Synopsis: Call the people ignorant. Savages. Violent. Animals with two
feet. Whatever we want to call the people that kill for honor, we
must always realize that it still happens. That no matter what we call
them, or what we do, 5000 women yearly are still getting killed for
honor.

"Shame" is part of the honor killing awareness-raising campaign in
rural Sindh and southern Punjab. The directors take to the road,
documenting shocking interviews that uncover a deep-rooted gender bias
in rural Pakistan as well as the first ever footage of a karion jo
qabristan, an unmarked graveyard where victims of honor killing are
buried without any ritual.

Yeti (Olympic Version)

YETI The mighty Himalayan man, is a myth now.

Tibet was a country the size of Western Europe when it was invaded by
China in 1950. Since the Chinese occupation began, large portions of
the country have been absorbed into provinces of the Peoples Republic
of China. Tibets culture, religion and resources have been under
systematic assault by the Communist Chinese government for decades.
During this time, 6000 Buddhist monasteries were destroyed along with
the centuries of knowledge they contained and hundreds of thousands of
Tibetans have been executed, imprisoned and tortured for the crime
of not wanting to be Chinese.

YETI is a film set in the backdrop of Mcleodganj, which is the Tibetan
capital in exile and is called "the little Lhasa of India".

YETI shows you how Tibetans had looked at the Olympic Games in Beijing
as their best chance in 49 years, when the international media is
closely following the happenings in China where the human rights
situation is at its worst. Its a provoking visual documentary on
Tibet, Tibetans and the worst possible steps they might resort to,
such as self sacrificing monks blowing themselves up just for the sake
of freedom and peace.

In Iran with gender discrimination how do they allow a women bus
driver? I am surprised, this is rare in our society. I don't know how
they decided to give permission: an Iranian lady.

Feminine, Masculine
a resistance to injustice regarding women in the Iranian society

In the male dominated society of Iran, Farahnaz Shiri, the first
female bus driver in Tehran, has made her own little society in her bus.

In Iran there are different sections for men and women on public
buses. Women should enter buses from the back door, which is separated
from mens entrance, and should sit or stay in a limited zone at the
end of the buses which is separated from mens zone.

But in Mrs. Shiris bus everything is vice-versa. She is the governor
and the only law maker of her own little society. In her bus, men must
enter from the backdoor entrance and must sit or stay in the limited
zone at the end of the bus.

Mrs. Shiri is struggling to prove herself in this society and
resisting a series of injustices that she faces as a woman in the
Iranian society.

Hope Dies Last in War

Director: Supriyo Sen

it is a saga of their individual and collective struggle, spanning three
generations, to get their men back: Dr. Shoma A Chatterji

An intermittently eye-opening, personal film revolves around a group of POWs
that are often overlooked, if not outright forgotten, overshadowed by more
high-profile or current soldiers in the same situation.

Supriyo Sen's POW documentary "Hope Dies Last in War" focuses on a single,
incredible fact: The two-week Indo-Pakistani conflict of 1971 left dozens of
Indian prisoners of war unaccounted for and presumed to be in Pakistani
detention.

It is unclear how many Afghan women use opium, but a 2005 addiction survey by
the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) put the number of adult female drug
users in the country at 120,000. At least 900,000 Afghans were estimated to be
drug addicts out of a population of 25 million in 2005.

Afghanistan has become by far the world's main opium producer, with a share of
world supplies that increased from 42% in 1990 to 87% in 2005.

Over the 2000-04 period, and despite adverse weather, yields in Afghanistan were
more than twice those in Latin America, more than three times those in Myanmar,
and more than four times those in other Asian countries.

The Imam and The Pastor: a story of forgiveness.

Imam Ashafa and Pastor Wuye led opposing militias in Northern Nigeria. Now the
two men work together bridging religious conflicts that have killed thousands.

In recent decades, tens of thousands of Nigerians have been killed in communal
clashes between Christians and Muslims.

"We formed a militia to protect our people". states Pastor Wuye. "My hate for
the Muslims then had no limits". The victims of his militia included Imam
Ashafa's spiritual leader and two cousins.

The Imam spent three years planning revenge. Then one day, a sermon on
forgiveness changed his life. The two men met and "gradually the relationship
began to grow". They played a leading role in negotiating a historic peace
accord. As Imam Ashafa explains, "even though we differ in some theological
issues, we will make the world a safer place".

Stories of two people from two very different countries, Indian folk singer
Prahlad Tipanya and North American scholar Linda Hess and their journey in

Where is Kabirs country? The answer is elusive, as they journey through song

"Lunch with Bokara - Myths, Money and Meaning"

Director: Stephen Olsson

Synopsis: Myths inspire our very actions and give each of us a sense of meaning,
both in our individual lives and in our culture and society as a whole.

Myths are no joking matter. Myths inspire our very actions and give each of us a
sense of meaning, both in our individual lives and in the lives of our culture
and society as a whole. In this program, philosopher and author Jacob Needleman,
and anthropologist Angeles Arrien join Bokara for an exploration the myths
surrounding money, time and meaning in society today.

In this lively discussion, several other core myths, including consumption,
pleasure and happiness are discussed and contrasted with the dominant myths of
America's founding fathers, as well as the dominant myths that operate in other
cultures.

Mowlawīya) are a Sufi order founded in Konya (in present-day Turkey) by the
followers of Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi-Rumi, a 13th century Persian poet,
Islamic jurist, and theologian.

“Give Me Your Love”

a film by Nameera Ahmed

Synopsis: "Give Me Your Love" is a short documentary that explores the role of
music, especially the reed-flute, in the lives of the contemporary spiritual
followers of the 13th-century Persian Sufi poet-mystic Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi.
This group in Turkey, called the Mevlevi Sufis, is most popularly identified
internationally as the "Whirling Dervishes". Rumi referred to the making and
playing of the reed-flute in his poetry, as a metaphor for the training and
subsequent transformation of the human spirit. This poetic symbolism still holds
power for the Sufis, who reveal their central connection to the reed-flute in
this film where the players are individuals actively engaged in the production,
performance and perpetuation of the Mevlevi music tradition. The viewer gets a
taste of their world, of their philosophy and beliefs, and their journey of love
explored through the "Sema" or "Audition", through the theme of the sublime and
the mundane.

MyFavoriteReview.com publishes Muslim Cinema and Top 101 Muslim-theme films for
World Day of Muslim Culture, Peace, Dialogue and Film

SAN FRANCISCO March 15, 2010.

To celebrate the World Day of Muslim Culture, Peace, Dialogue and Film
MyFavoriteReview.com has published a first ever paper on a newly defined term,
Muslim Cinema. The observance of the day should contribute to a better
understanding of the diversity in Muslim culture, in initiating dialogue with
people of other faiths, resulting in more just and peaceful world.

There are many ways to implement these ideals and media through film plays a
critical role in building awareness in society. To both celebrate and recognize
this unique event, the esteemed site CultureWars.org has published a paper on
the subject titled Muslim Cinema: An Introduction.

Muslim Cinema is defined as "a film movement by or about Muslims." Films from
both Muslim majority countries like Iran, Egypt, and Turkey as well as from
where Muslims are a minority in Hollywood or Bollywood were considered. From
these the Top 101 Muslim Theme Films" which show some positive aspect of Muslim
culture and context were compiled

The paper can be found at the following link.

"Javed Mohammed has provided an excellent introduction into Muslim Theme Films
that is sorely needed today," said Dr. Gerald Grudzen of San Jose State
University Global Studies.

This essay provides a multi-cultural perspective to explore the cultural
dimension of Islam."

"We are very proud to be a part of World Day of Muslim Culture. Great films
offer not only entertainment but help build awareness," said Javed Mohammed
founder and editor of MyFavoriteReview.com, "It is gratifying to see that this
work of labor and love for the last two years on searching the DVD libraries of
the San Francisco bay area for Muslim-theme films has finally born results."

Filmmakers are one of the social conduits reflecting and commenting about
society and the times. Good films can raise awareness and be a start to
addressing local and global issues. They can educate about cultures, and give a
broader political, religious, or social context. They can dispel long-held
misconceptions as well as be a catalyst for social change.

Subject: All That Is Solid Melts into Air: The Diaries of Vaslav Nijinsky

The Diaries of Vaslav Nijinsky

To the degree that one artist can bring out the best in another, Nijinsky is an
inspired masterpiece. Australian director Paul Cox has not fashioned a biography
of Russian ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky (1880-1950), nor is this a
comprehensive survey of Nijinsky's influential works. Instead, Cox ventures
deeply into Nijinsky's thoughts and emotions as expressed in diaries begun in
1919, just as the once world-famous dancer began his descent into... insanity?
The question is valid, for what we witness here--eloquently expressed through
Derek Jacobi's sublime readings of Nijinsky's diaries--are the musings of an
artist who lost touch with reality, only to rediscover a kind of glorious
divinity in the intensity of his own feelings. Cox accompanies the diaries with
his own interpretive dance of imagery, archival photos, and performed excerpts
of Nijinsky's dances, all set beautifully to perfectly chosen classical music.
As a filmed state of mind, this is a challenging work of art to be savored over
and over again

The documentary is an art piece. As such it is not intended as narrative. But in
fact, you'll learn more from the one-paragraph epilogue flashed on the screen in
the last 20 seconds than you will from the rest of the film. There are many
layers of symbolism -- bird imagery, religious iconography, blood, and so on --
that the viewer will not be inspired to untangle. Perhaps there's something
there, but somehow one tends to doubt it.

Flight from Death: The Quest for Immortality

The most comprehensive and mind-blowing investigation of humankind's
relationship with death ever captured on film. Hailed by many viewers as a
"life-transformational film," Flight from Death uncovers death anxiety as a
possible root cause of many of our behaviors on a psychological, spiritual, and
cultural level.

Following the work of the late cultural anthropologist, Ernest Becker and his
Pulitzer Prize-winning book, "Denial of Death", this film explores the ongoing
research of a group of social psychologists that may forever change the way we
look at ourselves and the world. Over the last 25 years, this team of
researchers has conducted over 300 laboratory studies, which substantiate
Becker's claim that death anxiety is a primary motivator or human behavior,
specifically aggression and violence.

I am Pema: a lyrical reflection on displacement and hope from Tibet.

Seven year old Pema was sent into exile from Tibet by her parents, in
their attempt to give her an education immersed in Tibetan culture.
The cost of their dream could be that they never see each other again.

Pema trekked over the Himalayas with a group of 39 children escaping
from their oppressed homeland to seek freedom in exile.

A day in Pemas world - her optimism tinged with sadness at missing
her parents. The young girl demonstrates remarkable strength in
settling into a strange new world in a new country with new parents
making new friends and discoveries along the way.

Of course return to Tibet is unthinkable!

Not to have seen the cinema of Ray means existing in the world without
seeing the sun or the moon: Akira Kurosawa

Satyajit Ray directs his first film and, by opening his eyes on his
country's realities, breaks every conventions of Indian cinema. During
twenty-five years, Ray's personal photographer Nemai Gosh will be his
shadow. This movie tells their parallel destinies, it ventures
Satyajit Ray's extraordinary artistic journey through the obsessive
lens of Nemai Gosh. It is the touching and mysterious story of a
photographer's disproportionate fascination for his subject.

For Nemai Gosh this documentary also means his last act of faith, it
will help convey to future generations the fruits of his lifetime
spent for another. He finally says what he bears on his heart. Giving
access for the first and the last time to the entirety of his
archives, he tells us: "this is the last thing I do for Ray".

A tribute to a creative genius, and to his privileged witness: Nemai
Gosh, the only one who still lives with him everyday. Because of him,
Ray resists to the bites of time.

Putin's Mama

Silver Wolf Award Nominee in International Documentary Filmfestival,
Amsterdam

Little is known about the childhood of Russian leader Vladimir Putin,
despite his position as one of the world's most powerful men. Now in
an extraordinary development, a Georgian woman has come forward to say
she is his mother.

Not much in Vera Putina's 77-year existence distinguishes her from all
those other Russian women who grew up and grew old in the Soviet
Union. Until, in 1999, she recognized in Vladimir Putin, the son she
thought was lost forever. Did the son that Vera thought was lost,
Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, really become the President of Russia?

A deceptively simple approach to a complex story. A playfully
interweaves reality and myth.

FOLLOWING JACKIE GLEASON

The television movie called Gleason was aired by CBS on 13 October 2002. I
watched it eight years later here in Tasmania, Australia.1 The movie took a
deeper look into Jackie Gleason's(1916-1987) life; it took liberties with some
of the Gleason story; it featured his troubled home life, a side of Gleason that
few would previously have known about. I knew nothing of it. Here in Australia
he was not as well-known as in North America. Gleason had two daughters by his
first wife. They divorced and Gleason endured a brief second marriage before
finding a happy union with his third wife, Marilyn Taylor.

Jackie Gleason's first recognition as a significant entertainer came on Broadway
when, at the age of 28, he appeared in the hit musical Follow the Girls(1944).
I was born that same year in Hamilton Ontario. CBS wooed and won him over to
its network in 1952. The year 1952-3 was a big year for my family. It was
their first contact with the Baha'i Faith. Gleason took the role of a lead
performer in the musical Take Me Along, which ran from 1959 to 1960; he won a
Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. I joined the
Baha'i Faith that same year at the age of 15.

In 1962, the year I began travelling and pioneering for the Canadian Baha'i
community, Jackie resurrected his variety show with more splashiness and a new
hook. The hook was a fictitious general-interest magazine called The American
Scene Magazine through whose format Gleason trotted out many of his old
characters in new scenarios. He also added another catchphrase to the American
vernacular. It was first uttered in the 1963 film Papa's Delicate Condition:
"How sweet it is!" The film was released in New York 7 weeks before what the
sociologist Max Weber, in his sociology of religion, called the full
institutionalization of a charismatic Force---in the Universal House of Justice.

On June 30, 1988, the Sunset Park Bus Depot in Brooklyn was renamed the Jackie
Gleason Depot in honor of this native Brooklynite. I had just started teaching
in Perth Western Australia in Technical and Further Education, my last full-time
job, in one of the most isolated cities on the planet.-Ron Price with thanks to
1 WIN TV, 6 December 2010, 12:20-2:05 a.m.

My life has been so different than yours, Jackie.
It was a miracle you lasted until you were 71!!!
On five packs of cigarettes a day and all that OH
--all that booze and emotional ups-and downs,
all that egomania, all that narcissism, all those
damaged relationships!!! I did not do half as
bad, Jackie..but then I did not become even
half as famous and never made all that money.
The perils, eh Jackie, of being famous and rich!

I did enjoy The Honeymooners,1happy memories
from a lifetime ago, before my mother decided to
sell our TV. You lasted a long time, Jackie, and I
had no idea what happened to you. You were just
a character on TV, an image, a simulacrum as Jean
Baudrillard calls the fascinating hyperreality of TV.2

1 The Honeymooners was a TV series that appeared from 1 October 1955 to 22
September 1956. I used to watch this program with my mother and father before
they sold out TV which, they thought, was taking too much of my time away from
my studies at school.
2 Jean Baudrillard(1929-2007) was a French sociologist, philosopher, cultural
theorist, political commentator, and photographer. His work is frequently
associated with postmodernism and post-structuralism which I leave to readers to
follow-up on should they wish to read his books and essays about simulacra.
