A previous place I worked in (medium secure) there was identified educational needs for several patients which the hospital was unable to meet. I contacted our local college and after several meetings they agreed that they would provide weekly literacy skills session and a weekly IT session. These sessions were supported by OT staff and all materials were provided by the hospital, the college provided 2 tutors for literacy and 1 tutor for IT which seemed to work well. Two out of the six patients successfully completed formal qualifications and for the others it was fed back that being back into education was a positive for them.
The tutors were part of a group that are specifically employed to provide education to people with mental illness and were very experienced in working with this patient group. So I suggest that you contact your local college.

Hi all
We are trying to get funding for education at our low secure hospital for people with learning disabilities. PCT's won't fund education stating that they only fund 'health' and Leaning Skills Council state that PCT's ought to provide education under 'activities' monies. How are similar departments funded?
Do your PCT's fund education and if so can you send me details and if LSC fund your education can you also send me details so I can go to both with some sort of evidence. Thanks Sandy Vale
