We have provided and developed an OT admissions assessment service for several years in a high security hospital and developed an OT specific clinical pathway to guide the service. There is also a parallel MDT clinical pathway. Both have been audited over a period of time. OT is a valued part of the admissions process most noticeably in occupational functioning and risk assessment / management. Would be happy to share both clinical pathways with group.

interesting topic
most surprising that there is no OT input to admissions at a High security Hospital
as the nurse interloper to this group, i think that i find that a strange concept
why no OT?
can't the discipline add value to admission processes?

Thanks. The admission care pathway has now been uploaded to the same location. I didn't put it there immediately as it hasn't got an occupational therapy section (we currently don't provide an OT service to the male admission unit which this care pathway covers). Regardless though, it may be of interest to the group.

Subject: RE: [forensic_occupational_therapy] Clinical pathwaysKathryn,
Thanks for your message. We have used care pathways at the State Hospital for some time and in general found them very helpful. I have uploaded our current care pathway for continuing care onto the webpage http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/forensic_occupational_therapy/ If you go to the "files" page, you will find a folder for care pathways - the document is downloadable from there. You will see that there's not too much to it. Experience has shown that the less complicated the pathway is, the more likely it is realistic and achievable (both in terms of recording and compliance). I would say successful implementation depends upon clearly transmitting to staff the benefits of care pathways and allaying their fears. Several of the items on the care pathway I uploaded relate to the Clinical Standards Board for Scotlands standards on schizophrenia (you may well want different items). We have found care pathways to be a great way of demonstrating our compliance to these standards.
I set up the care pathways folder so that other departments could upload their care pathways and we can all benefit from our pooled experiences.
I hope this is of some use as a start.
