Yes,
Sometimes I forget too, that what we actually did actually meant quiet a lot
at times to a significant minority.
I'm Paul by the way- I founded the orginal thing (wrapped in long nights of
passion, panic, and the occasional liquer) along with Dimitra and Rachel.
I have never written to this board before, but wrote quite often (QUITE
often in the early days ;-)) in Friends of the Heroes.
You know, other people have asked me what's happened to FOTH. I tell them
it's been buried alive, which sounds quite gruesome but, in a perverse kind
of way, it's not actually dead and buried. Some heart and a morsel of muscle
still beats; through this group, through the people that remember, through
the people that told me they cried at Tom's stories, guffawed at my
shenanigans, fell off their chair at Ian's inventions, felt affinity with
Dimitra's musings, and wanted a nice cup of tea with Rachel and Belle.
There's many, many more people to thank (and I never have) for keeping the
thing going when, for some people, everything else was falling apart.
Time for a cuppa I think...

Hello everyone.

I think I have never, ever posted to this list before. I didn't even
remember it was on yahoogroups. In fact I first typed out
"all@..." without realising... But, anyway. The
story.

On Saturday, I went to see ballboy, as some of you know. Yesterday, I
posted on the Bowlie message board on a thread about that gig. So
what, I hear you say. Well, someone noticed that I had "a friend of
the heroes" under my name, which is funny, because I had considered
changing it (I entered it three years ago, when I first joined Bowlie,
though I never really posted or read it much) but decided against it,
mostly because I couldn't think of anything as cool. Said person sent
me a comment saying that "I read one of your zines ages ago and it was
the best thing I'd ever read!"

Of course I messaged him back, and he told me this:

"Gosh, was it really three years ago? I used to keep the first page of
that zine, the ink polaroid story, sellotaped to my door in Ireland
when I lived there to remind me of there being beautiful things in the
world.

It was the first time I'd heard of the Aislers Set too, and I bought
an LP after reading thta zine, and then they became one of my very
favourite bands, and kept me coming back to Bowlie to learn more about
them, which then changed my life in rather a lot of ways, (not to
mention the way I sing and write!). I wrote a wee story, tangentially
based on the writing in that zine, for the Bowlie Slow Graffiti zine
that came out last year, too.

I guess sometimes things you do have effects well beyond what you think.."

I have to say I am speechless. I just thought you'd be interested to
hear this too. I keep forgetting -- no, wait, I find it hard to
believe -- that there were people out there who cared about what we
did, even though we never got to hear about it. But I do so like to be
reminded.

I hope everyone is fine, by the way.

Dimitra

Hiya,

How is everyone one? Spring is here which is great! there are flowers and stuff all round and about and easter will be here soon which is even better since it will mean I'm holiday!

Anyway I've just been making  a new  cover for foth and though I would find out if anyone was  still here who wanted to write a story or review or anything to go up soon? As there are no more deadlines anytime you send it it will go straight up on the site.

Well I hope you are well,

I have a story if you'd like!

I saw a beautiful sight yesterday...on a gray rainy day, in a geometrically beautiful place...
I sat myself down upon that concrete bench exactly opposite from it's twin bench on the opposite wall...in a faintly sunlit corridor with two heavy doors...both a few feet from either bench, also on opposite walls.  I sat in a world of alligned opposites...with my thermos-ed coffee and swirled frozen yogurt...my hot caffeine, my cool sugar--individual vices and a newfound delicious mix--my lovely, oddly craved opposites.  The girl on the opposite bench across from me had a cigarette in her hand...her vice I assumed.

As I put my petite white yogurt cup down on the bench arm beside me--like a perfect miniature table, keeping my black warm thermos in my hand--I sank comfortably into my crossed legs and looked out to my left...At the open, mishapen, irregular, hilly outside...beginning just a few feet away, evenly lined with the end of the ledge above my head, evenly marked with the widening, cloudy-sun-blared concrete pouring into a grassy lawn.
Confused and scattered, as I gulped my blackened coffee and licked my smooth yogurt slowly by the delicate spoonful, my head turned to my right...deeper into the more interesting area under the ledge, the area with two opposite doors along the plane of our opposite benches, the nearly 3-yard walkway gapingly, invitingly, pleasantly leading to a single staircase down.  In this direction the sky seemed darker...only a shade of muddy, wet, grey peeking from the walkway opening, as if a great mouth was slowly widening in preparation to tilt and gulp the entire entity of the ledged corridor...me, my wind-swept cheeks, the smoker, her hoodie, and all.

Gazing wistfully into this direction, my eyes lost focus, my head instanty cleared and my thoughts lost their tangles in the fog and grew with each preceding rain of hope...my mind stretched and expanded and freed itself into a beautiful oblivion with a calamitous, yet gentle wave, a sonic discarding of negativity.  It was...like the very geometry of the place, the very exactness, left my mind free from responsive thought and my eyes liberated from actually seeing much of anything.  I felt purified...and a very moment later after a warm, gritty sip, I actually pulled my head, my drinking mouth, up and above from my hot coffee in just the right second...I saw approaching from that singular staircase a set of two.

It was a set of opposites.  The girl was slightly sturdier and bigger, maybe even taller than the man.  Those silhouettes, they were just opposite enough to make me glance a little harder a second time after the...the typical, casual, polite, look-away any normal person does after surveying a sudden new movement of bodies....  With their opposite effect and before my second look, just at first glance, my mind categorized such a two as almost a little brother-sister...or a girl toting along a little guy friend.  When I noticed they were holding hands, and their coloring appeared, and they became distinct from the gray..well...I saw they were beautiful in their unity.  And...something about them eminated, through the welcoming space between me and them, through even a matter of seconds (and in striking harmony with their proceed from the gray) a peacefulness.  She could have been a dove and he her unexpected nightingale mate.  He could have been a mockingbird and she his lark.

And in those matter of delicious coffee-alerted seconds, in that geometrically defined box of a space...the two were approaching.  And once they reached the line of the doors, well their hands drew tighter together as their shoulders drew a cross as their torsos drew a semi-circle as their faces drew an eclipse and their bodies drew a curtain before my eyes...covering that patch of gray sky.  From those clasped hands and two shoulders, it was just a side half of their bodies that was visible to me, as their legs stayed rather separated and their arms on my side stayed open and apart.  But their faces, they were in in a parallel.  They were a human-heart.

As their mouths embraced for a momentary second, and their eyes met in allignment--their airy souls their peace and contentment joined.  It was just a second; but a fully tangible second at that.
And they drew apart, piece by piece and so gradually, so naturally it seemed (though it was only a regular departing of two who had quickly kissed) and pulled their opposite ways.  Hands locked, their arms outstretched away from their previous center like blossoming petals of a flower bud to the sun in growth...and in a millisecond all that was left to divide me and that patch of sky was their arms...their arms meeting like the thin angled tip in that faint trace of their previous heart.

And they gazed just for an apprehensive, perfectly, beautifully stage-worthy fraction of a second.  But their moment was so heavy, thick, that it lasted and transcended fleeting time with it's weight.  The two gazed into each others faces...their eyes wedlocked in a line.  They were beautiful, those opposites...
--and his body went to my right, turning to his left, towards the door with the bold, black arrow above it on the ledge reading: Physics.
--and her body went to my left, turning to her right, towards the door with the bold, black arrow above it on the ledge reading: Physics Astronomy.

And the heart was convulated and skewed as their arms turned with their torsos, until those outstretched limbs finally left their center clasp at the last possible stretch.  And they took their last few steps in my sight alone, into either door, directly across from one another...and simultaneously they
 went their opposite ways.

Hello,

I hope everyone is well. Just to let you know we've decided to go over
to a 100% blog format for foth.

Let me know if you have any thoughts:
http://www.friendsoftheheroes.com/contents/

We'll still post up stories and music reviews as normal but we won't
stick to an issue kind of format becuase it was getting to hard to
find enough articles. If you have anything you'd like to post up at
anytime you can email me and I can either set you up with a an account
of your own or post your work up for you.

I also think we should change the cover and theme of the contents page
pretty regularly so if you have a picture that you would like to use
for that just let me know.

Have a great weekend,

Rachel

dear all (those of you who might still remember me... faintly)

since i have recently got what i experienced as a disapproving e-mail from
dimitra, i was reminded that it was high time that i let everyone know i will be
(very briefly) in the u.k. in january, and i would LOVE to meet all of you (or,
failing that, as many as i can manage!)

i'm more or less only going to be there between the 4th and 7th of jan, and then
the 18th again, which probably makes it a little difficult... and i'm probably
going to nottingham on the 5th, but... oh dear, i'll make a plan anyway!

hope you're all doing fabulously!

love

JohaN

ps. i've got a 9-5 job for next year, and ONLY ONE... and hopefully i'd be able
to write again!

pps. also, rachel, while i'm there i'd like to contribute something to the
hosting fees. if a can give that to you in person, so much the better! but
otherwise, can you let me know what would be the best way for me to do that?

Hiya

A quick note for anyone in the UK, "Tripping Over" (an aussie/british
drama) tonight will feature ballboy – a song anyway – they're not
appearing in the flesh.

It is on at 10 o'clock on Channel 5 and you can find out more here:

http://www.five.tv/programmes/drama/trippingover/

Bye for now,

Rache

Hi Rachel,

Sorry, I planned to write for this issue but have obviously missed the deadline.
I'll get some things to you for the next one.

On another note, I am moving to New York in Feb/Mar, and was planning on
writing a journal of the tranisition etc. Sounds awful I know, but I'll endevour
to make it as original as possible and avoid trite like "wow, all the buildings
are so big etc". I'll gladly send some if your interested. No worries if
not though.

Thanks

Daniel

Hello,

I was planning on reviewing the Unilever Series in the Tate Modern (more commonly known as The Giant Slides!!!) for the new issue. But I have been to the Tate twice since the slides opened and have been thwarted in my attempts to give them a go. So I'm going to write about my attempts to go on the slides instead! And make it a to be continued and hopefully I get to go by the next issue!

Grainne.

Hello English girl,

I'm in England! And it's a rather crazy place to be and there's very
much happening (my course --and not my curse-- has started this week
and we don't have internet yet which is not nice at all, so I hardly
have time to reply but:

to they are more than welcome to, although don't feel you have to anyway.

I wouldn't mind contributing a bit... something like 10 pounds.

> While we are on the subject though, do you think it is worth paying for the
next year?

So are you suggesting the site should be taken down?

Well, no, I don't (see reasons at beginning of email) and perhaps I
never will again, even if the site goes on. But I'm not sure it should
go down, even if it stops being produced.

The laptop's running out of battery... and Martijn has only brought
half the cable... BOYS! I tell you! So I must go now

Take care,

Hiya,

I hope everyone is well.

Two quick things:

1) We are due to pay for the next year's hosting and domain registration for foth on Sunday. This will come to about £50 which if anyone wants to contribute to they are more than welcome to, although don't feel you have to anyway. While we are on the subject though, do you think it is worth paying for the next year? Despite the recent makeover things have been pretty quiet.

2) Does anyone have anything for the next issue on 1st October?

Take Care

Rachel

I missed that bit.

I’ll volunteer to write in the blog, if you’re still after people.

I can't take much credit for the new site - Rachel was the one who downloaded Word Press and wrestled with the new code!

I'll write something.   Plus, I'm away in Sept, so I'll get October's to you as well.

Incidentally, while I have you, you have this page in Witchgrove:  http://www.witchgrove.org/Members/FriendsoftheHeroes.php  originally because of Ian's involvement, but there's mine now too.   If you want anything adding to that page, including any links associated with FotH, please let me know and I'll get them bunged on.
