Hello Team,
I received my new FCD and have updated the firmware. It appears things are
working on my system.
Now I'm at an impasse as I'm not able to find an UI that will work with my OS. I
tried to get Spectravue to work under wine but that ended up being a no joy.
As I search around, I find many incomplete threads for other Linux users which
is leading me to think we don't have a usable solution at this time.
So I felt it was time to seek a little guidance on what my next steps are. It
would be very cool if I could get this working in time for an upcoming ham swap
meet as a show and tell.
Thank you up front....

Soundcard support is a little flaky in the VMs. Did not work last
time I tried it.

It does on a Mac, I have had Spectravue working under VMware Fusion
on a Mac, so that might be an option for Linux users too.

With VMware, you can connect USB devices directly to the Windows VM,
which is what I did.

Hi all,
Hate to do it, but need to liquify most of my ham gear, and whittle it down to
the bare minimums.
FCD #472 for sale BELOW COST. :-)
Email only please for details.
Thanks,

Same here. I had mine on the 28th!
Looking forward to playing with it and learning from others on the Yahoo Group.

My operating circumstances mean I don't really need a filter, here on the Isle of Man, I think only the coastguard, and lifeboat men have pagers - the public service was turned off a good few years ago.
I use the FCD on a mix of antennas - sometimes on a 'white stick' type 2m/70cms vertical - it works pretty well with this, for more 'satellite' type use I will hook it up to a 3 ele on 2m, 5 ele on 70cms antenna from Sandpiper (similiar I suppose to the arrow antenna) - this is mounted on an az/el system.
When using the az/el system, I have a diplexer to take the 2m/70cms seperate feeds from the antenna and feed this to the FCD - this will also work as a 'filter' of sorts if I hook up to the 2m part of the diplexor & terminate the 70cms with a dummy load.
Please could you email me your answers to m0tfo@... you could also try the poll. But we have a lot of questions and the yahoo POLL system is a little useless. Please don't reply to this post here, or it will just go on and on send your views to the email above. 73

FUNCube dongle 2m pre-amp and filter. - Survey
The FUNcube team are developing a 2m receive only preamplifier for the FCD.
The preamp will include a SAW (surface acoustic wave) bandpass filter for 2m which offers rejection above and below the band. The preamplifier will give around 10dB gain. It can be used at the antenna or at the FCD. The completed unit will be powered directly from the bias T incorporated into the FCD from 3rd April onwards. For earlier models of FCD and conventional receivers, the preamp can be powered from an external bias T with a 5 – 13.8V supply.
This survey seeks your opinion on how this should be presented to the user. If you could spare a few minutes to send your thoughts, that would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
The Funcube team

 1) Would you benefit from a 2m filtered preamp? I do not use 2m so do not need this product My FCD works fine at my location on 2m I do have some signs of overload at my location but do not need a filtered preamp I believe this would improve 2m reception and it is a product I am interested in.
How would you use a FCD preamplifier and filter? At the antenna Near the computer At the end of a USB extension cable
What connectors would be most suitable? SMA to dongle, SO239 to antenna SMA to dongle, BNC female to antenna BNC Female to dongle, N Type female to antenna BNC Female for dongle and antenna None of the above. Please specify e.g. 2x N-types
As a FCD Pro user, would you be interested in a 2m filter / preamp As a completed boxed unit ready to go. As a lower cost completed / tested PCB but no connectors or enclosure As B above but with drilled enclosure and connectors As a kit

In your particular installation would you prefer connectors One on each end of the box Both on one side (useful for waterproofing as water cannot run into box if both cables have drip loops) Some other arrangement. Please specify.
We have prototyped 2 different preamps with different bandpass responses. Would you prefer:
a) Filtering below 132 and above 160MHz – A cheaper solution which removes broadcasters and Digital radio around 200MHz + 70cm etc. b) A tighter 140 to 150MHz response which also reduces UK pagers, but is more expensive.
c) A custom filter just for the satellite sub band or 144-146.

If not using one of the latest FCD with an internal bias T, do you think we should provide an optional bias T for use with other radios or earlier FCDs? Y/N
Are there there any other characteristics / features that you would like to see included?
Hello all,
I've tried to install the WRplus 1.04 SDR sw, downloaded from this group, but
when I try to launch it, I get the error message: Sorry, this release of WRplus
has expired: please download a new version from the WRplus site".
How can I fix it?
Here: http://www.wrplus.altervista.org/ I can't found any new version to
download...
Look forward for your kind help...

Ciao Luigi,
look for this same issue in the past messages, there are some freeware
to lie to WRPlus, or change the PC date to 2010.
But it have it better with HDSDR with the ExtIO in the same folder.

QUISK works fine (Ubuntu 10.04, atom CPU) if one can tolerate
adjusting the frequency with QTHID. In principle, one could modify
QUISK to drive the FCD but I have not attempted this.
Let me know if you would like a copy of my notes on this.

Just got my FCD and have a couple of questions I have been unable to find
answers to....:
Successfully did firmware upgrade to 18.f
Have SpectraVue running; can change freq with FCHid.exe
Cannot affect the centre hump at all with the I dc and Q dc - there is not the
slightest change.
Can receive only ONE powerful FM radio station - nothing else; cannot receive a
reasonably strong WX stn on 162.400.
Tried a Helix antenna, and 2 meter beam - no change in noise floor or anything
else....
Any suggestions as to what I might try gratefully received

Hi John
Couple of things to try first.
Not sure what OS your using? but make sure the record level of the FCD is set to
'1'
Try a different USB port.
what are the noise levels with and without an antenna fitted?
Try this first, and if still no luck, let us know and we can delve a little
deeper.

1- You MUST get the volume down. For any flavor of Win7, that value is "1"
2- Be sure to use a USB cable. Performance here is HORRIBLE on at least 3 computers if I try to use the dongle plugged directly into the computer. Using a USB cable to get it away from the computer (including my laptop) makes it perform much better....
You should have a no-signal noise floor around -100 to -110 or so.

Not out of the woods yet - but certainly
1. set vol in Win 7 to '1' made a big difference and was able to almost
eliminate center spur and level about -95 (with default)
2. don't have a long enough one at home - but got it a bit away from the
computer - no real change there
3 - still do not get any sig increase when I connect outdoor 2 meter antenna
(albeit with a clip lead) - don't 'any' change.
Will get longer usb extension and a proper connector for the sma port and see
what they do.

All,
Just so no one else has to figure it out, this is how I got gnuradio
working on ubuntu 11.04 Natty-whatever.
My sources:
http://gnuradio.org/redmine/wiki/gnuradio/BuildGuidehttps://www.cgran.org/wiki/FuncubeDongle
Install a bunch of stuff. I am not sure all of these are necessary, I
just went through my .bash_history and pulled all of this out. There
are surely duplicate entries in here, but apt-get will deal with them
appropriately so I wouldn't worry too much about them.

In /usr/src get the current files:
git clone git://gnuradio.org/gnuradio
git clone https://github.com/csete/gr-fcd
Build gnuradio first then the gr-fcd project.
cd gnuradio
./bootstrap
./configure
make
make check
sudo make install
Then:
cd gr-fcd
./bootstrap
./configure
make
sudo make install
That should do it, hope this helps.
