This is a forum to share and discuss ideas around the future of European farming. We are now told we have entered or about to enter 'peak oil' which is the point where fossil fuel production starts to decline. By 2020 we may no longer be able to rely on this energy system. This brings with it immense challenges and none more so than with food production. At present large scale conventional western farming uses ten calories of fossil fuel to produce one calorie of food. Something clearly needs to change in the way we grow and distribute our food. We hear lots of ideas from different camps; Organic farming,Permaculture,Biodynamics,Natural and Synergistic agriculture to name but a few.
Which techniques can we rely on to heal the soil from decades of chemical poisioning? what system can we rely on to truly support and sustain itself? what should we depend on to bring us food security? Ultimately what should we be investing our energy into at the 11th hour?
We understand these debates raise important and hence emotive issues though please be aware this is a group that values patience, tolerance and respect for differing views. In this way we can hopefully reach higher personal (and sometimes collective!) clarity on these issues.
