Have a look at this.
In essence any modern installation should have a NTE5 fitted.
The proper version seems only available to BT openreach , Or the same with NTL- Logo.
Have not seen any retailed by the manufacturer.

With an NTE5 Installation the incoming underground or overhead dropwire termination is connected to the two screw connectors (across the gas discharge protector)
The virtue of the NTE5 is that the socket includes a test socket at this point.

Customer wiring goes to a detachable front plate therfore it is easy to disconnect the house wiring to prove the fault on or off the BT or other Service provider Network.

You will see a double socket for ADSL use this is ideal assuming your router can be located next to the NTE5 position because it means ur ADSL filters are direct to the phone line.
The problem with the small in line filters fitted into extention sockets is that in effect your ADSL filter position is in effect in parallel with all the internal wiring and of more importance across all the various phone capacitors and telephone gubbins.

If you have not got an NTE5 but just an older style PSTN socket then the best solution is below.
Follow links to fitting your own NTE5 this is clever as it fully isolates your installation from the Network.

Seems a long while since I actually worked on the customer end. 1969 to be precise.
In those days one could have any colour of phone as long as it was black.
Lots of man hours were spent wiring the telephony parts in parallel and all the bell circuits in seies.
Stopping bell tinkle was quite an art.
Then some bright sparks invented plug in sockets and easy cabling .
Was only the big posh houses which had plug in phones.

Anyway hope the above links help as it mighty expensive if the faults get proved to ur installation by the phone man.
But the tidy up of the phone installation can make some useful speed improvements.
I am lucky here as we have a pretty fast connection, One advantage of the City.

I've had a Solwise faceplate splitter for several years and can recommend them. -- R Urwin, G6RRJ private This message has been scanned for malware by...
