Subject: TOWER SAFETY

Mike sent to LRS  Yahoo
For health and safety considerations.
ALL CLUB MEMBERS please  look at link below.
Thank you

This should be read by any member of the club who goes anywhere near any winch or tower.
It might save ur life or at least ur fingers !

I notice the HF shack has a note saying pse refer to winching info in Lecture room.
I cannot find info it think it went when we redecorated.
Will try and mackle something together sometime from this and other web sites.

For note the P40 Has an american Heavy Duty Fulton winch (Auto Braked)
Link for Fulton Winch this is the Heavy Duty auto brake as on P40
If you buy a tower or winch go for this type if you can .
Never Ever go for cheap boat or automotive winches unless you have advice from a mech eng.
They are ok for winding but not very good at braking!

Ref  P60 has a cheaper possible German Origin Winch which is OK .
Note handle MUST be left on whenever tower is raised.
In case Hinge Pivot fails as the spining handle assists the braking mechanism.
Same applies to lufting operations.
Dont,t think this applies to the P40 Fulton as it has a different opeation. But I will check.

If you look at the dates on winches u will see the original tower purchase date on the luftin winch,
And a later date for a replacement winch on the elevating winch..

To date,
1.    Have Lufted over tower fits well on the mackled up support even if it looks a little off centre.
2.    6 meter beam re aligned the bolts were well adrift !

P40 Tower needs some work will get up sometime perhaps next tues ?
All antenna mounting particurly 6m need a good cleaning and re Waxoiling.
P60  needs a good greasing ?
I think I have some graphite grease and copper grease also.

Some antenna corrosion is obvious.
Rotator could do with whipping off and balls greased,
Same with top revolving top mechanism.
Cables seem OK but notive when rotator is put full clockwise ie north cables are binding on Head unit.
70cms and 2meter elements need unbending,

Note in V/UHF shack says do not use 70cms antenna is this true ?
Or does it relate to the 726 rather than antenna itself.

2 Metre beam sems a bit odd.
Did not get a sharp peak on GB3VHF beacon, Which was fairly weak.
Suspect something wrong,
Might be the bent elements but more likely a dodgy coax connection or faulty balun ?
Is the Driven element upside down,
It is unusual to have the socket in a position to not repel water.

P40 and antenna look good I assume the working party has sorted it.
Have not checked the winces on P40.

Have some ideas for the 23cms long Yagi talk to u anon.

Tks to Steve G4EOF for tower info,
I also have other links if anyone needs info.
