Bob G3ORY and Jim G4DZL, both members of the DMU ARS, are running a
direction finding event this Sunday, 9th November just south of
Bagworth village. Members of LRS are welcome to come along and give
it a try.
Receivers for both 144MHz and 3.5MHz and SI cards are available on
loan. Telephone Bob to reserve on 01455 552648. You will need to
bring your own compass.
This an on-foot event to relaxed IARU rules. 5 transmitters will be
on the air on each band transmitting in sequence for 1 minute. The
tx's will be at least 400m apart (and from the start) on 2m, 200m on
80m.
Following a knee injury my experience is that it is quite possible to
walk (hobble!) rather than run, forget to bring a compass, and still
find all transmitters in the 120 minutes allowed (90 mins for 80m) so
you don't have to be ultra-fit.

Summary
The event is incorporated into an Orienteering event promoted by the
Leicestershire Orienteering Club. Short and long courses will be
available using both the 144 MHz band (morning) and the 3.5 MHz band
(afternoon).
Location
The registration point and start for the ARDF event will be at
SK451079. Note that there is NO PARKING nor any toilet or other
facilities in the vicinity of this point. Please park in Bagworth
village a few hundred yards (metres!) away - the roads are quite
wide - and walk to the start.
Bagworth Woodlands is an area of recently planted woodland and a
reclaimed colliery tip. Apart from the tip, the area is only gently
contoured but there are some areas of water and power lines to aid
the planner in setting an interesting competition.
Safety
Competitors are responsible for their own safety and take part at
their own risk. No smoking in the forest. Whistles should be carried
(the emergency signal is 6 blasts repeated at 1 minute intervals).
Suitable footwear for uneven terrain and adequate clothing for the
time of year and likely weather conditions should be worn. Please
keep dogs on a lead to avoid incidents with the runners!
