Hello, my first post the LRS Yahoo group.
As some of you know I am VERY new to Ham radio and really my main
interest is using APRS while out observing severe weather in the
USA. I also wish to be able to report severe weather the American
National Weather Service as I see it occurring – this is just 2
meter voice transmission.
Any way I have just ordered a TinyTrack3 TNC from Byonics
http://www.byonics.com/tinytrak/ as well as a second hand Yaesu
handheld VX-150 cheep (£60) from eBay. I also ordered from Byonics a
VX-150 to TT3 interface lead. I will have to make up a regulated
supply for my 5 volt RS232 GPS but this is no trouble.
I plan to plot my real-time APRS location over a NWS radar image –
very useful during storm intercepts and already I have a rough web
page constructed – being tested using a mobile APRS call sign that
is based in Oklahoma – I am sure that the guy does not know that I
am tracking him right now LOL. Example page is here.

Right now I have some issues with my level of licence – I will think
I need UK intermediate status in order to transmit APRS over in the
USA – but not to worry – my partner GONEF is licensed so we can just
use his call sign. Right now I am working quite hard just to pass
the foundation.
Also I would like to mag mount an improved VW-150 antenna on the
roof of the vehicle to increase range so I am looking for a better 2
meter antenna – if any one can give any advice here it would be
welcome.
Many thanks
Stuart Robinson
