Company which tried to bring Formula One to Donington in administration

• Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd holds meetings with staff
• Lost 17-year contract to stage British grand prix last month

The company which tried to bring Formula One to Donington Park has gone into adminstration, according to the BBC.

Donington Ventures Leisure Limited lost a 17-year contract to stage the British grand prix last month after failing to raise £135m from a bond issue to upgrade facilities.

It is understood the firm's 40 full-time staff were called to meetings at the circuit today to be updated on the situation, and that the decision to put the company into the hands of administrators will be confirmed shortly.

I just came across this interesting bodge courtesy of Electronics Weekly and thought LRS members might be interested.

It is a way of automatically disconnecting electronic equipment before lightning strikes, and automatically reconnecting it after the storm has passed. As designed it is for a computer and telephone line, but a radio aerial feeder could be switched the same way.

Dear All,

Irene, Tony Lord’s yf, called in to see us the other day and had some sad news to report. Tony, G1YEZ, died in January this year. Initially he was diagnosed with cancer of the bladder and that was successfully treated but then it was discovered that the cancer was spreading and he finally succumbed in January.

In a message from Geoff Dover, G4AFJ, the Leicester Amateur Radio Show committee has announced that the Leicester Show will be held at Donington one last time. Due to the planned demolition of the exhibition building, the date has had to be brought forward to 4 and 5 September. The Donington management have assured the organisers that there will be no major race meeting that weekend so there shouldn’t be any repeat of the traffic problems that affected some earlier years. More information from Geoff by e-mail to geoffg4afjaol.com.

Point taken. re Shack management
We do have a switch,   In fact we have two.     Plus dummy loads.
Was hoping to use a double pole coax relay so that both radios would be permanently  connected.
ie Beam to Ts950 long wire to ICOM. as default.
Switch would then automatically change over to TS950 to wire Icom to beam.
Always been concerned someone could cross connect the Tranceivers !!

I even have some coax and plugs to make up some more sensible leads.
We just need a body to do a quality install..

HF beam needs some serious work we think there is a missing strap,
Coax re route etc
Also some urgent  mtce required on P40 winch.

                Again bodies always required !

BYEeeeeeeeeeeeee
Enough radio.
Dusting duties and Allotment calling

Good news about the club HF shack main transceiver, at long last.

I think it would be a good idea to now set it back up in the shack with the two associated antennas i.e. beam and long wire / dipole, connected via a switch. This way all members will be able to use the HF shack.

Any antenna experiments could then take place using the other less expensive rig which is also the one to use on field days.

Hello Alex,

I have now completed my diagnosis on your radio club’s Kenwood Radio. The main problem is caused by poor connections to a control PCB it also required a CPU reset. The total cost of repair including VAT and return carriage would be £79-01p.

Saturday, 18 April, 2009   SSB SPRINT

Perhaps from LRS ?
Good training opportunity HF BANDS PHONE (sadly not top band !)
The SSB EU Sprint takes place on 18 April. The EU Sprint website at www.eusprint.com contains all the details as well as information on the QSO format, which hopefully will be more familiar now, as a result of the RSGB 80m sprints. The interesting thing about the EU Sprints is the multi-band nature of the event, as it takes place on 80, 40 and 20m.

I have Ubuntu, and the PC ear-marked for radio work - the eeePC - has a variant of Debian, which is compatible.
However I have not yet got around to doing more than ear-marking it. I'm on the list for a radio-PC interface unit project at LRS, but until I get that built I wont be doing anything for real.

Having said that, feel free to ask me about Linux and/or Ubuntu issues.

I've done a bit of searching, and could not find anything obviously better than gMFSK.

Hi,

Does anyone have experience with AR data mode software running on Linux?
It needs to support RTTY, PSK31 and CW. I'm running the Ubuntu

It sounds like a 55 elememt tonna.

If the elements stand off the boom on little plastic supports, maybe 40mm long then its a tonna.

A very good antenna, When I was in IO83 I used four in a box pattern for many years.

But once they have been in the sun (uv) for a season, the plastic element supports become very brittle, anything bigger than a starling will break elements off. I ended up sweeping the elements up off the drive. For that reason alone I wouldn't buy them these days. Driven element only rated 300W although even at much higher powers never had any issues.

From behind the mountains here I use a 2m dish rather than yagi's - but *if* I were in the market for a ready made product: Wimo make a range of SHF yagis that use a modern optimised design and are far more robust than the old Tonna. Sadly the economic downturn means antennas bought in Euro's are very expensive.

At LRS we have a long  Yagi for 23 cms,
Approx abt 5 metre or longer.
Think its WILMO or possibly Tonna
Conventional elements ie not JVL loop.
Elements are made from enamelled copper wire.

Although maybe OK for Portable use the antenna has failed twice where the boom joints are connected.
Easily mended but for how long?

Basically its not robust enough for mounting at a respectable Height bearing mind the open aspects @ LRS.
Wondering perhaps sell it and thinking of something more modest.

Anyone got experience or recommend a suitable alternative.?
Robustness rather than performance !
Maybe something we can use with a TV type rotator rather than tying up the spare heavy duty rotator.

Anyone want to buy it for /P

Yes was spotted by many including Steve G4EOF !!

John Alexander who gave us the Enigma lecture also found many faults
However XYL thought it was quite good so anything she thinks is OK,
Wireless wise is FB here OM !
Not sure wether she will approve the possible new vertical system will wait till Plum  Tree grows to hide the furthest top band support.
Before possibly sneaking in a modest HF vertical.
Now 260 ft on 160 Fully balanced using the mk3 xformer. Remote tuned.
But can only run 100 watts or so but hope to build a high powere remote ATU some time.
Furthur plans include a sloper 7 and 14  MHZ if works OK  maybe forget vertical.
