Hi everyone, and sorry for cross-posting

BBC Radio 4's 'Book of the Week' this week is 'Second Lives' by Tim Guest
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/arts/book_week.shtml

Here are the details:

*Monday 4 - Friday 8 June 2007

Second Lives

*By Tim Guest, abridged by Jane Marshall, read by Paul Panting

A revelatory journey through the electronic looking glass of alternative
life online, where 35 million people around the globe abandon reality for
a virtual life.

In these computer-generated worlds, players can create a new self: with the
click of a mouse they select eye colour, face shape, height, even wings.

They can buy virtual land and build houses on it, go shopping in virtual
malls and buy virtual haute couture, make and sell works of art, earn
virtual money and take part in a virtual marriages.

Graham Stanley (SL: Baldric Commons)

Hi everyone, and sorry for cross-posting

Tomorrow (Friday May 25th) is the Second Life Best Practice in Education
Conference, which is shaping up to be something quite special - apart from
the presentations, there is a lot of activity going on (there are around a
hundred booths/vendors at the NMC Outreach sim, for example)

Details of presentations are here:
http://slbestpractices2007.wikispaces.com/PresentationSchedule

I'll be presenting with my colleague Kyle Mawer, about the Teen Grid project
we're working on for the British Council, and we'll be going into some
detail about some of the ways we'll be using using Second Life for language
learning:

"ESL, Second Life and Teenagers : Learner Autonomy for the Digital Natives"
Friday 25th May @ 04.00 SL time (11.00 GMT)
<http://slbestpractices2007.wikispaces.com/PresentationSchedule>
I'll also be streaming the presentation through Sandbox A at Worldbridges,
and asking people with questions to join in the Skype conference (Skype
name: eflbridges) - it'll be recorded and available as a podcast later if
you can't make it.

Hope to see some of you there!

Graham

Thanks to everyone who attended our presentation at Learning Times
yesterday, as part of the WiAOC2007

I think it went well apart from a few initial hiccups - just shows you
that you can prepare as much as you like, but you can never prepare
for the unexpected!

- when we'd uploaded the images for the presentation, we found that if
you use anything other than Safari, they are huge.

- We had 80 slides, and exceeded the Elluminate maximum. So, as we got
near the end of the uploaded slides, we had to delete some to make space

- We were able to view the slides fine when they were uploaded, but
just as we started, the screen section of Elluminate went blank for us
and we couldn't see any of the slides. Fortunately our audience could!
It did make it difficult speaking about the slides without being able
to see them, and I had to switch between my Powerpoint and the
Elluminate interface, which made things a little awkward.

- Then, just after Vance Stevens introduced us, my (bluetooth)
headphones cut out, so I had to scramble for another pair

We were exhausted when it was finally over!

Details of this presentation and the other WiAOC recordings are here:
  http://home.learningtimes.net/learningtimes?go=1563545

You will need to become a member of Learning Times to be able to watch
them (it's free and easy to do)

All the best,

Graham

Hi everyone,

I'll be presenting this weekend with Kyle Mawer at the Webheads in
Action Online Convergence (WiAOC 2007) on Friday at 11.01 GMT.

Details are here: http://www.webheadsinaction.org/node/158

The conference promises to be something special, with three days of
(almost) non-stop activities:

Here's what Vance Stevens has to say about the conference itself:

"The theme this year is CONNECT: Conversations on Networking,
Education, Communities, and Technology, and though not specifically
mentioned in the theme, many members of the Webheads community of
practice, http://webheads.info, are practitioners in language
learning.

This is the second time our community has hosted a free online
conference. You can replay the first one at http://2005.wiaoc.org

This year we kick off in a pre-show event at 22:00 GMT May 17, with
the start of a Webcastathon hosted by http://www.worldbridges.net.
The conference itself starts at midnight GMT May 18 (evening of May
17 in the USA) with a keynote speech by Leigh Blackall and continues
for three days with more talks by Stephen Downes, George Siemens,
Etienne Wenger, Robin Good, Barbara Ganley, Teemu Leinonen, and many
other presenters whom you can see on the schedule at
http://schedule.wiaoc.org.

To attend the conference you can register for free at
http://www.webheadsinaction.org and use the calendar there or the
schedule link above, or our online help pages, to work out how to
access the presentations and make comments or join forums. The will
be a voice stream of most events available at
http://www.webheadsinaction.org , as well a live chatroom for use
during the conference, and we hope to have someone live online
available to assist you at any time during the conference at
http://www.tappedin.org

We look forward to your joining us May 17/18-20 for this unique
adventure in online professional development. We hope it will be
educational and F.U.N.

Please send this out to any others you think might be interested.

Vance Stevens"

Hi Tom,

There's a timetable published in SL of the live events that will be
available, etc. There are also 2 chats tomorrow, which I'm assuming will be
in SL - However, best ask in the IATEFL Moodle for details rather than on
this mailing list

Interesting! You've got to like that sort of game, I suppose, and the
"confidence thing" is probably going to be much bigger than the actual (surely
limited amount of) language they are going to learn.

But WoW is surely SO much more exciting than Second Life ,-)! The "win/win
thing"... You actually do have a point, and some winners, not like in SL.

(The Warcraft boardgame is also one you could use in a F2F classroom....)

Thanks to Gavin Dudeney for sharing this - sounds like a very promising
experiment

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=13341

Here are some choice quotes:

"All my students were getting up at three o'clock in the morning, putting on
their headsets and chatting with these 12 year-olds in China. The Chinese
kids were berserk about it. The teachers were saying it was their favorite
class. It was really a win/win thing."

"Some of them were really starting to sound like Americans. A lot of time it
was more a confidence thing than a language thing. Also, they're getting
conversational English they wouldn't get in a normal class, more authentic
English, with phrases they wouldn't get in textbooks."

Hi everyone,

it looks like there's going to be a lot of language learning activity going
on soon in Second Life:

http://www.technologyreview.com/Infotech/18510/page1/

LanguageLab.com has a 21 sim island, where they'll be teaching students
English and Spanish (to start off with) in the adult grid, and the British
Council island will be opening soon too in the Teen Grid.

All of this and the promised voice-integration system mean that it's going
to be a very interesting time in SL for language learning

Hi everyone,

The BBC has an interesting report on a panel discussion about virtual worlds
and MMOs in general:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6431207.stm

Here are some choice quotes :

*"Big media firms are rushing to copy the success of online games like World
of Warcraft, a conference has been told."*

"The panel also predicted that non-gaming MMOs such as Second Life would be
prevalent in the short term."

"This medium is going to destroy TV - and it's going to happen in short
term."

"It will be really hard to tell what is and what isn't an MMO. There will be
a lot of experiments in convergence between social networking and MMOs."

"Five years from now a social networking site without a 3D universe will
look like a dinosaur."

Food for thought,

Graham
