Shame to see you go out Bo. But (even though this year's Braves weren't quite
as good as usual in the regular season) clearly the Braves aren't intending to
give up their World Series crown easily.

No word as yet. I was planning to email him but haven't got round to it. Your
email has reminded me and I'll email him this weekend as to his thoughts and
then report back to the group. Hopefully there'll be something in mind and
enough to keep you in the game Bo.

How are unearned runs decided both in real life and GB.

examples
1. This is pretty easy I think, if there are 2 outs and there is an error that
should have resulted in an out, then any subsequent runs are unearned.

2. But say there is only 1 out, are subsequent runs unearned or are runs scored
after the 2nd out unearned?

3.What if there was a runner on second that advanced to third, then the next
guys hits a sac fly and the runner scores is that unearned?

4. What about an error that does not miss an out? runner advances to 2nd on a
single because of a bad throw with no outs. Next batter hits a double and the
run scores, then 3 strikeouts. Should the run be unearned? if he was on 1st
instead of 2nd he may or maynot have scored on the double?

This is not a quiz as I don't know the answers only my opinion. Just wondered if
there are rules for each situation of if its at the scorers discretion.

Athletics vs Blue Jays highlights...

Game 1: Chad Bradford was knocked out of the game after conceding only
one run to four baserunners in the 3rd. This was to the A's advantage,
as Matt Williams pitched five scoreless innings. Meanwhile, Roy Halladay
conceded three unearned runs in the 5th and was replaced by Jason Frazor
soon after. Toronto tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the 9th on a
Ken Harvey home run, but Antonio Perez's double in the 10th secured a
5-3 lead, finalized by a 1-out, bases-loaded save for Rich Harden.
Oakland made several field saves in this game, stranding 17 Jays
baserunners in all.

Game 2: Frank Menechino's homer off Gavin Floyd gave the California team
a 2-0 lead in the second, with triples involved in both sides'
subsequent scores as Oakland led 3-1 at the 7th inning stretch.
Oakland's relievers eventually squandered Tom Sanders' chance of a win,
as Huston Street conceded a pair in the 9th for a 4-4 tie. Frazor
battled Pedro Pena for four overtime innings, but four great plays by
the Canadian defense allowed Dave Berg the opportunity to double, steal
and score on a Jayson Werth sacrifice in the bottom of the 13th.

Game 3: A tight opener in Oakland saw Ramon Hernandez draw the home team
level in both the 2nd and the 4th. One play later, Menechino's single
gave Ted Lilly a lead. Lilly conceded only 2 runs on 6 hits, but tired
rapidly to leave the game after 5.1 innings. Relievers Rich Harden and
Street restricted the visitors to unproductive small-ball plays, to
restore Oakland's series lead and make John Bale (8IP, 8H, 2HR, 4ER) a
complete-game losing pitcher.

Game 4: Fighting to stay in the series, Toronto started brightly with
two runs in the first. Yet the A's appeared to have Halladay's measure,
with six consecutive baserunners for a 4-2 lead in the 2nd. The game
exploded again in the 5th, with Lyle Overbay's triple sparking Dave
Berg's double and a Jayson Werth homer: 5-4 to the Jays. Alex Rios
knocked Oakland starter Rick Helling out with a solo shot at the top of
the 6th, and Berg saw off Williams with a 2-RBI double. With men on the
corners in the bottom of the 6th, new man on the mound Frazor benefitted
from a neatly turned 6-4-3 double play, and needed no further help to
secure Toronto's 10-4 win and send the game into a decider back at the
Rogers Centre.

Game 5: Floyd's early struggles would have been much worse without
fielding help, but Oakland still led 3-1 in the middle of the 4th.
Bradford's start crumbled in the face of 4 hits to start the next
half-inning, with Williams holding the Jays to a 4-3 lead. The next few
innings were far less eventful, and Frazor took over a 5-3 lead in the
7th. Oakland loaded the bases to force him out, but Scott Downs induced
a grounder from Perez and saw out the 9th. Three-hit games from Todd
Jackson and Menechino sandwiched an unproductive middle order for the
A's, in a deciding game which could have gone either way.

Phew. I'm pleased with the result, but it was bad luck for Simon in a
very tight series. Our chances against the Twins appear very slim
indeed, though we take comfort in the positive form of most of the
batting lineup.

Picking 20th, I'm very pleased with our draft pick. Edwin Encarnacion
lacks fielding skills, but plays corner outfield and could make it to
the big leagues without much delay, most likely in RF or DH platoons.

Cheers,

Philip

Another hard week for my Angels that just about keeps them in touch with the
Rangers and Athletics.

This is easily my best squad of players (which shows you how different the
leagues are), but currently the young pitchers who performed well last season
are really struggling - Thompson, Kelly and Bootcheck are all level 9* and all
have -ve season form.
The batting is just fine, leading the AL and on a par with the Marlins.

So to try and turn things around we have signed Justin Speier from the Rockies.
He's only pitched 24 innings for last years surprise champions and looks very
good value on only 4 wages.

We've also listed our youngest leftie hoping to get a really good veteran in his
place. Arredondo is a good trade level 10 prospect and more than likely to rise
to 8*, and trade level 11, next season.
His weakness is his control which did show signs of improvement during the
off-season.

Not sure whether 8 weeks is enough time to turn things around.
Expect we need to go better than 8 lots of 6-3 to make the post season.

Congrats to Mike. Just too much good pitching from the Braves. I bonused hitting

I need to start naming picks as I now have 2 Fernando Crespos.

Any word on the proposed enhancements to the games from Danny? I've been holding

Well done Dave on the Twins win. 3-0 was maybe slightly flattering but I never
felt we caused you any great problems. As you said, Mientkiewicz did really well
but he was on his own. Hinske and Merloni did little, and Gonzalez went 0-10 and
DH Dukes went 1-12. The Twins pitching did an excellent job and kept us to a
batting ave of 216 and an OPS of just 305.

The much maligned (well in Ian's newsletter anyway!) Mariners pitching actually
did well, achieving a team ERA of 3.37. If I'd just seen that number first in
the report I would have fancied our chances.
The decision to start ex Twin Javier Lopez in Game 1 (partly out of necessity as
1st choice pitcher Scott Atchison wasn't ready to go, partly a gamble that Lopez
could re-find his form on his old ground, particularly after two good starts in
Week 18) didn't work out as he gave up 3 HR which gave the Twins an easy Game 1
win. Kida and Atchison both did well in their starts in Games 2 and 3 and that
gives us hope for the future, but the Twins were just at another level to the
Mariners.

Like others, pleased with my 1st rd draft pick.. a 6* 19 potential catcher - my
14th choice drafted 18th

Pretty happy with our overall performance. G1 was a bit of a nightmare for
Braves leadoff Angel Chavez - his first two ABs were denied hits by Reds field
saves and then he made a big error to turn a 2-0 lead into 3-2 Reds. Took us
till the 9th to recover and extra innings to win. G2 saw Colon show some fight
after a terrible outing vs the same opposition in wk 18. G3 was the highlight -
young McBride fanned 13 Reds including Branyan and Teixeira back to back in the
9th. His pitching heroics weren't even the best of the week after that perfect
game in the National Series which will have pleased the Red Sox new skipper.

Overall the Reds played tough, fielded very well and could have taken G1 or G2.
I'm pleased to advance. Next up the Cubbies who had the regular season edge and
who, if they can put together another pitching series like the NLDS, could be
very dangerous. I can't see them managing a pitching series like that again this
post-season, any more than I can see the Braves having a team ERA of 0.62 after
next week. I predict runs, relief pitchers getting lots of innings and a long
hard series for both teams.

Pretty happy with our draft pick. I had no expectation he'd still be available
and I had greater needs elsewhere (OF, SP) but couldn't turn him down. A young
2b with Ex fielding and lots of potential... very nice indeed.

cheers

What makes him even more unusual is he has been both a WS winner and loser in

I thought I'd let you go first Marc ;-).

Good win for the Twins - best of 5 series always make me nervous when I'm hot
favourite. As Tony wrote beforehand, everything was basically in the Twins
favour, but things don't always turn out that way.

3-0 was rather flattering for the Twins, it was a hard-fought series with game 2

at its best, but the pitching was excellent. Mientkiewicz played very well
against his old team but didn't get a lot of support. For further details, I'll

And so it's on to the ALCS Vs the Blue Jays - no surprise there. The two teams
have met at this stage 3 times in the last 4 years, with honours currently even.
One thing I do wonder with getting a sweep at this stage is whether it does you
any favours as far as form in concerned - my 4th starter didn't even get to
play, so that's dropped form straight away.

Yep, just to show how similar we're all becoming, I ended up with my 23rd
choice! The only one already picked who I didn't select higher was the D'Backs
choice - I wanted a batter more than a pitcher.

No reports on the DS yet ?
Ok, I'll start.

Yippee !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some excellent pitching was the decisive factor in the NLDS games.
Rather surprisingly that meant that the Cubs progressed to meet the Braves in
the NLCS.

Amazingly the Cubs pitching went like this :-

Kerry Wood - no runs off 5 hits and 2 walks in a complete game WIN.
Ben Diggins - 1 run off 3 hits and 2 walks in a complete game LOSS.
Livan <sigh> - 4 runs off 9 hits in 4 1/3 innings
Super Rookie Ascanio came in to claim the WIN with no runs off 2 hits and 1 walk
in 4 2/3 innings.
Seth Etherton - no runs off 3 hits and 1 walk in a complete game WIN.
Not a single HR conceded.

Through all of that the batting was pretty average, but did enough to win enough
games.

Commiserations to Richard, it's pretty dismal to see your team play like that.
But he should get more attempts in the future.

Mark's Pirates did indeed get player #8, and I got player #21 (with 16,18 and 24
all already having gone).
The last player to be picked before those 4 was player #5.
It would have been pretty amazing to get player #5 from 17th pick.

Surprised nobody went for the top ranked 7* catcher.

Interestingly the two players with the errors both had 4 RBIs in the game too.

Thanks Patrick, always a tough opponent and we will see many more battles as we

1 question, do we have HFA because we had the best record or because the AL won

In the time I've had to review the Red Sox's current roster, adding depth to the
outfield was certainly not something high on my agenda but, with the limited
time I had to scout players and the unpleasant prospect of him going to another
team, I felt it a good move.

There are a number of players I want to off-load and the addition/promotion of
Josh will help in that regard. I also see him helping with fatigue/injuries to
my starting outfielders, perhaps even DHing this season. Ultimately though I
imagine he'll spend much of the year in the Minors, in one way or another.

All this doesn't hide the fact that our pitching corps could do with a little
help, especially in a small park like Fenway.

Reasonably pleased with my pick and, on reviewing, think you got excellent value
for your pick Patrick. Keiron got a great player - don't know what he'll do
with him but he'd be on my draft squad all year. That's what will happen to my
guy (Braxton Lane) who looks like he'll become an excellent player as our
rebuild continues.

Shows the strength of this league in terms of the number and quality of the
managers as there's not a lot there even picking as early as I am in the second
round. I think it will be as much potential as I can get and another to sit on
the draft squad all season so that they're able to contribute in Season 9.

So near yet so far for the Twins, losing the ALCS in seven games.

After getting soundly beaten in G1 and G2 I was expecting a swift exit, but we
won G3 in Minnesota, then almost pulled off a dramatic victory in G4, eventually
succumbing 6-5 after scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the ninth.

3-1 down in the series Harang blew a save and we eventually found ourselves 7-3
down going into the bottom of the 12th inning. Two outs later with just one man
on base, we were seemingly dead and buried. But five successive clutch hits gave
us an improbable 8-7 win, which would live long in the memory had we not gone on
to lose the series anyway!

We did win a see-saw G6 in Boston to force the decider, and with a fatigued Pena
starting for the Red Sox, we had every chance. After leveling the game 7-7 in
the top of the eighth, we still had the bases loaded, but Sox shortstop Simon

swept!) I've no complaints about the end result as the Red Sox were probably the
better team overall and have been all year IMO. In particular our pitching, so
good against the Rangers, just couldn't stop the long ball.

Well played Stefan and good luck to the Red Sox and to Philip's Mets next week.

It has nevertheless been an historic season for the Twins, with a first ever AL
Central title and first ever playoff series victory. We have a lot of young
high-potential players on good form, so keeping my fingers crossed for a good
set of EOS adjustments to finally have the squad we need.

Heh. You have the support of the Cubs. We don't want to play the Reds either if
we are lucky enough to get past the Diamondbacks.
Although a 5-7 regular season record isn't that shabby.

Starting to sound like a Super League coach ...

First round today and a strange experience for the Braves, packing up their gear
and heading off to Cincy. A 12-0 defeat in week 18 to the Reds is a reminder
that this is going to be a tough series.

The players know the rest of the league is willing us to fail and with Betemit
injured for this and any potential NLCS this is a big ask. Whether we're up to
the task will be evident later.

Russ Ortiz will be given the ball in G1 for Atlanta and our fortunes will
probably be decided by how he goes in that game.

Good luck to Bo and the other playoff skippers,

1. 3

2. Guardado (plus Hundley and Ortiz).
No AL batters as far as I'm concerned.
This seasons selection was so different.
Bradley, Hall and Hudson all missed this season, if they were in contention
anyway.
Jeter and Koskie are not ever presents.

No idea if there have been any players that changed conference.
I'm sure it would get mentioned more often if there were.

3. 164

Honestly I can only think of Ortiz. I figured Alou was in with a shot but he
missed out one recently. Sanders wasn't around in the first 2 seasons, though I
have no doubt he'll pass Ortiz for most all-star appearances at some point.

So 1.

Russ Ortiz in the NL. I guess maybe someone in the AL but I'm not familiar with
the AL players tbh.

200?

thanks for this Ian and for your on-going efforts!

OK, thanks Dave. Interesting answers - I think I'll wait for the weekend and
see if others have a go before revealing the actual answers.

Not many more though, I'd imagine. Maybe 4?

Thanks Marc,

Surprised not to have had more guesses yet so can encourage it a little bit
further by commenting on your answers!

1. Wrong. The clue is that there are more than 2.

2. There is at least one other (maybe more) but these two are correct and have
appeared in all 7 games.

3. Wrong - but not a million miles away. I won't say whether it's higher or
lower until there are maybe a few more answers.

1. 2 ?

2. Ortiz and Hundley ?

3. 174

I think that Cubs players must have the worst record collectively in the
All-Star games. They are awful every year.

Not at all Dave, not at all!! Would just be very frustrating to lose to such an
inexperienced manager...... in MLB5 terms!
