MELBOURNE -- A review into government funding of elite sports in Australia has ignored Olympic officials' calls for bigger budgets and recommended extra funding be linked to performance targets.

It also recommended the federal government negotiate with the states for a share of lottery revenues for sports funding and that athletes donate "time and expertise" to local sports as payback for receiving government funding.

Now there's an idea!

A ugly picture is beginning to emerge of what the LDA (London Development Authority) are planning as 'legacy' in the so called post-Olympic 'park'. Neo-con insanity necessitates the inevitability of yet another property development scam but on Monday (9/11) I discovered a detail that helps bring it all into perspective. In making various calculations about where to site wind turbines the busy Olympics brains have worked out that the NW corner of East Marsh is the only possible place, chiefly because regulations require it must be at least 250m from any housing. A combination of the illegal St. Teresa Terrace housing estate on Main Marsh, requiring its own 250m exclusion area, and air flow to the other turbine at Eton Manor make the NW corner of East Marsh the only place left. When I enquired why the turbine could not go elsewhere on the Olympic site (i.e. south of the A12) I was told there was so much housing planned for the site there is NOWHERE that will be 250m from a flat!
So the sustainable, green, games and legacy park just means another massive residential development.

About 250,000 spectators are expected to pour into Vancouver, B.C., for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in February. Yet according to the city's Olympic committee, only a paltry 10,000 hotel rooms were available to them. With three months to go before the Opening Ceremonies, the pool of rooms at hotels in and around Vancouver -- from highway HoJos to the Four Seasons -- has essentially dried up.

"Traditional downtown accommodation is for the most part booked," says Emily Armstrong of Tourism Vancouver, the city's tourism agency. "And it's been that way for about a year."

The Olympic housing crunch is nothing new: In recent years, Athens, Salt Lake City and Turin, Italy, all faced shortages. (The micromanaged Beijing Games were a notable exception.) It's not just the massive influx of spectators that's to blame. The "Olympic family" -- the tens of thousands of officials, observers, sponsors and media who make up the official Olympic entourage -- traditionally gets first dibs on lodgings. In Vancouver, the family blocked off more than 21,000 rooms, leaving ordinary fans to scramble for the remaining 10,000.

13 November

At 8pm this evening, a Sydenham police car arrived at the Pemary Ridge settlement in Reservoir Hills.  The armed officers went to a home, and kicked down the door.  At the time, a man was walking by, and the police assaulted him – they struck him, and swore at him.  His sister who saw the attack screamed in terror.  When members of the community gathered around to see what was happening, the police opened fire, and started shooting people at random.  Some residents ran to the river to hide.  They reassembled at the top of the road, and began burning tires.  More police arrived and opened fire several times.  The police are continuing to shoot at random now.  They are kicking down the doors of residents' homes.  All press are urged to rush to the scene.

The whole of this, and last month, is just reports of the police shooting.  2010 has arrived, and by by the time the tournament comes, the stadium will be full bullets.

London faces the largest security challenge since World War II when it hosts the 2012 Olympics, British security minister Alan West said Friday.

West told a London conference that the British capital will almost certainly be at a higher risk of a terrorist attack as an estimated 15,000 athletes, 14,000 coaches and officials and 20,000 media workers arrive for the games.

He said the country's threat level will likely rise to severe — the second-highest rating on a five-point scale — meaning an attack is considered highly likely.

"We are not complacent. We do not underestimate the scale of the Olympics challenge," West told the Royal United Services Institute think tank.

West, a former head of Britain's navy and defense intelligence staff, said the event would be "possibly the greatest security challenge the U.K. has faced since the Second World War."

RIO DE JANEIRO — Organizers of the 2016 Olympics are pitching host city Rio de Janeiro as a potential "power island" immune from blackouts like the one that left 60 million Brazilians in the dark, though experts questioned Thursday whether a safe energy haven for the games is possible.

Rio has the capacity to produce more energy than it can consume with natural gas-fired plants and nuclear energy facilities nearby. And Brazil's Olympic Committee touted that fact in its bid proposal, saying locally generated energy could supply the city alone instead of being fed into the national grid.

So presumably if there was a national power shortage during the Olympics the Rio organisers would be happy to watch the rest of Brazil suffer a massive loss of power, so that the Games could continue, without offering any assistance!

the idea of `The Cloud', a new hideous construction to grace the city's skyline
in time for the 2012 Olympics. It would take the form of a "giant cloud" that
would "float" above the city skyline (well, at nighttime anyway, during the day
it would merely look like the ugly and ridiculous construction it actually is).
The structure, tall mesh towers with ethylene tetrafluoroethylene `bubbles' on
top, would reach 120 metres into the London skyline, where it would be used to
project "weather information, spectator numbers, race results" and so on..."

Deighton said, "in this economic environment it's not really acceptable to tax payers to build a temporary venue when you've already got an acceptable one, if the trade off is another 20 minutes travel time".

Sad that only in stressed economic times do those in charge of the Olympics think of using an 'acceptable venue already in place' and allowing for 'a little extra travelling time' for athletes.

vandals have painted over graffiti at Hackney Wick and Fish Island.  It is not known who the perpetrators were.

The incident is believed to have taken place a week ago.  The vandals used an unimaginative white paint, and are believed to have used chemicals to blur graffitied images at Hackney Wick.

Persons with any information on this matter should contact the Citizens' Intelligence Network immediately.

Sonic crowd control device for Vancouver police
Police say long range acoustic device only for communication

Vancouver police have a new crowd control device capable of emitting painfully
loud blasts of sound, just in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics, CBC News has
learned.

The long range acoustic device (LRAD) can use sound as a weapon, emitting levels
that cross the human threshold of pain and are potentially damaging to hearing.
But it is also designed as a communications device that's clearly audible up to
a kilometre away...

...The device, labelled as non-lethal, was designed for the American military
and was first used publicly in North America in September as police in
Pittsburgh tried to control anti-G20 demonstrators...

About 2012

After performing this summer in Beijing for the Open Performance Art
Festival, Bill Aitchison returns to London with his evolving and
open-ended work 2012, for the Wallspace gallery in the heart of the
City of London.

2012 explores the conspiratorial mindset, colliding perspectives,
theories and visions. With black humour it presents a snapshot of
where desire and fear lead the imagination. Starting from questions on
the nature of knowledge and how and what we can believe today, 2012
follows some seriously twisted logic, offering perceptive commentary
on its way.

“I have always enjoyed reading about esoteric theories, UFOs and that
sort of material, says Aitchison, “but never took it seriously. I
noticed that more recently that there has been an upsurge in interest
in this area… I was troubled by the way they started out making sense
but then took wrong turns.” He adds, “The principal tension [about
conspiracy theories], one which I think a lot of people feel, is that
of not knowing what to believe, about the uncertainty that comes from
not having full command of the facts.”

2012 is a performance “about the conspiratorial mindset as a whole,
rather than any one specific theory,” the artist explains. “Whilst
there are some pretty crazy theories in there, some of which are
extremely funny, I also include things I genuinely believe and things
I half believe or would like to believe…. 2012 is not simply about the
stupid things other people think, it lands a lot closer to home with
the crazier theories intruding in and casting doubt upon more
conventional ones. That said, some bits of the show do look a lot like
very black comedy.”

2012 was created in collaboration with Boris Kahnert (light) and James
Dunn (sound) and with the support of Arts Council England, Theatre in
Motion Beijing and Burton Taylor Studio Oxford

South Africa's chief of police has told Sky News that his officers should kill criminals if they are under attack. Lisa Holland, foreign affairs correspondent, in Johannesburg, November 09, 2009

The country has one of the worst crime rates in the world and Bheki Cele says the time has come to do something about it.

"There's no way that you can be soft and diplomatic on criminals," he said. "We are taking them on at their own game."

Mr Cele is South Africa's new police commissioner and he has declared war on the country's criminals ahead of next year's World Cup, when thousands of football fans will flood into the country.

Anti-Olympic Torch marchers and their demands for indigenous rights, social justice, and free speech are the cause of the latest epidemic of "spastic delirium" and "verbal diarrhea" in BC news offices, production studios and even the Legislature, reports say.

About 50 people showed up to protest the "Canada Pacific Spirit Train" event Sunday in the Vancouver suburb of Port Moody. Taking a position in front of the main stage, the group carried signs and placards, and a large banner that read "Resist 2010: No Olympics on Stolen Native Land."
