Help - novice at work!!

Hello,

I am new to the world of gardening,
having just moved to a house that actually has
one!

But I need help!!

There are two existing
borders, that have been completely dug over and I want
them to be gorgeous by this time next year ( I thought
I might be too late to plant anything now?). The
soil is clay, they both back onto walls and the garden
is NE facing, so are often shaded How should I
prepare them, what could I plant (bearing in mind I don't
have too much money to spend, and I have young
children and pets so it would have to be 'safe' plants)
and when should I do it all? Any help or advice would
be oh so appreciated

Thank
Melissa
