Subject: My experience with Garmin and the Forerunner 305
johninminnesota
Send Email Send Email

I purchased a Garmin Forerunner 305 about two months ago, and while I
really liked the idea of having the GPS and HRM and tracking data, my
experience with Garmin and this particular product has not been good.

When I first got it, I followed the instructions, got it plugged in
and went out for my first run with it. When I got home and plugged it
in to my computer USB bus, the computer froze and required a reset to
reboot. Once the computer came up again, the USB bus didn't work. I
realized that the likely problem was too much current draw on the USB
bus, and was going to need to get a new motherboard :( Darned
disappointing, but being a computer and electronics person, I went and
purchased the new motherboard and a powered external USB hub and about
12 hours later I was up and running again.

So, this time I plugged the Garmin Forerunner 305 into the powered USB
hub instead of the computer. As soon as I did this, my computer blue
screened (crashed) and it did so nearly every time I plugged the
Garmin in. At this point I decided it must have been a problem with
the Garmin Forerunner and got on their support system. Here is where
the real problems happened.

Their support person told me:
1. Check for chipset names that are INTEL, NEC, etc. These are
compatible chipsets with our devices.
2. If you have a chipset name that contains SiS, Via, OpenHCD, Ali, or
Alr,
these chipsets are not compatible with our devices and may not allow
the USB Card Programmer to function.

That wasn't on the package, or in the instructions, but regardless I
learned that I had a compatible chipset from the manufacturer. So
after letting them know that and that I now expected some compensation
for my loss and that something definitely caused my motherboard's USB
bus to go bad they asked that I send the unit, cable, charger, etc
back to them so they could determine what might have caused the
problem, which I did. After a week or so I asked if anything had been
determined about what had happened but they didn't have any answers. I
told them at this point that I expected some compensation for my
damaged motherboard - another unit maybe? Something. They offered to
send me a new unit and a cadence unit (for my bike) but I indicated
that I already purchased the $60.00 cadence unit and that it didn't
work on my bicycle due to the frame/pedal design and that a new unit
would help since I really wanted to start using the new toy I bought.

After getting the replacement unit which didn't cause any blue screens
(after a couple weeks) and seems to be functioning as well as the rest
of the ones I've read about (not good), Garmin refused to compensate
me in any way for my motherboard - I offered to accept the unit that I
sent in back as payment - Garmin's response:

"Unfortunately, it appears as if we are unable to determine why the
failure occurred given the information you provided. Thus we question
whether the Forerunner 305 had anything to do with the failure on your
PC. The device you provided does meet all specification standards. I
apologize we could not provide a more conclusive answer. I will no
longer respond to questions regarding the previous unit.".

Unfortunately, I had already sent the bad Forerunner 305 back to
Garmin along with the crash dump files from my PC and offered to send
them the motherboard several times as well - they were never
interested in what brand/make/model of motherboard I had - so I was no
longer able to determine if a component had failed in the charging
circuit of the Garmin and was out of luck.

And that has been my experience with Garmin. Great idea, but a bad
company. There are a lot of problems with Garmin's products, unlike
many better manufacturers like Canon and Apple computer, they don't
deal with the problems in an equitable manner.

UPDATE: 2 October 2006 - After I filed the complaint with the Better
Business Bureau, I was emailed by Garmin's senior staff attorney
telling me he wanted me to contact him regarding this issue. I sent
him my "final response" from Garmin's technical support, to which he
responded that they wanted to offer me another 305 as payment for my
troubles. Unbelieveable arrogance and stupidity (in my opinion). I
requested they pay me for my motherboard and my time since I was now
VERY DISAPPOINTED about how I had been dealt with, and basically the
attorney told me in about 3 paragraphs that I needed to read their
warranty which clearly states ... "blah blah blah". If there wasn't a
problem with their products why on earth would they have their Senior
attorney contact me and try to get me to accept payment? They care?
Yes, they care that I am making this public. And I hope you learn
something about them from me.

Be ForeWARNED!

I have just purchased my unit and have read the 'book of words' to set
the unit up. However I am unable to view my actual pace. For example if
I run 1 mile and would like to run at a 7 min mile pace can I view my
actual pace duering this run which would allow me to adjust
accordingly. I am sure the unit can deliver this but dispite going
over and over the book I am failing to resolve my problem. Thick or
what.!!! Regards

Hi, I had similar problems with the 205 at first. Now that I have
played with it a little, I learned that there is a lot the watch can
give me. It is usually a lot more than I need. The key is to know
what it is I am looking for.

On the specific issue of PACE, you have several pace options.

PACE: PACE gives you a current real time pace. It is accurate at the
moment. This is probably not the pace you want.

PACE - Average: This gives you the average pace since you began this
activity. This is better than PACE since it will tell you from the
beginning of the run what pace you are on. However, for many of us
who run at different speeds over the course of a run, this may not be
very helpful either (or may not be what you want).

PACE - Lap: This is the one that I use. PACE -Lap tells you the pace
of the current lap. If you hit the lap button at the start of the
race or at each mile, or if you use the auto lap function, this tells
you what you are doing on the current lap. If you don't use laps,
this pace will be the same as PACE - Average.

There are a few other PACE options but let's just start with these 3.

To actually show the pace, you need to configure the screen or display
of the watch. On the watch, hit the Mode Button until you see a list
of menu options that starts with History, Training, Navigation and
Settings. Use the down arrow button to move to "Settings" and push
the enter button to select. Then push the enter button to
select "General" then "Data Fields" and then select a screen to
configure. I just configured "Main 1" - you might start there.

You will first be prompted for the number of data fields you want to
see on the screen. I am a data junkie so I use 4 data fields. After
selecting the number of data fields, the cursor will highlight the
first field. Push the "enter" button and then you can scroll up and
down to select the data field you want in that first position. I use
the following 4 data fields for running:
1: Time
2: PACE - Average
3: Distance
4: PACE - Lap

Let me know if this makes sense or if you need more specific
instructions for configuring the screen. I am at
ACMERSINO@... if you want to go off line.

Steve,

As a kind of making your mail longer I would add another question:

Does anybody has any experience with using the warranty in Europe for
a Garmin forerunner 305 which is bought in the USA?

Thanks,

Hi

You pay your money and you take your chances...

BHIP Ltd is a GARMIN KEY account.. if your unit goes wrong in the UK,
we get you a new one within 48 hours of receiving your faulty one...

If you buy from a non UK or "grey import" source... you would have to
send it back to Garmin directly... average return time is 2 - 3 weeks.

If you guy from a "grey importer" you also risk paying large DUTY
charges.

We would rather you buy from us and take support a UK business.

How do I start a new workout on the Garmin 305? All my runs are
running together on the same data fields. Do I need to go to Quick
Workout section to start one? With my old Nike Triax it was just push
start and off I'd go...

Thanks in advance!

David, if you are asking about resetting it, just hold down the lap button and it will count down from 3 to 0 and reset the workouts.

I just got my 305 and have enjoyed using it. I feel it's pretty
accurate with regard to distance covered and average heart rates. The
problem I have has to do with my understanding the history section
after I enter a workout into the computer. The map is fine, the graph
of pace and heartrate is fine . . . . but in the details section, even
though I can tell how far (and for how long) I habe run in each
heart-rate range, when it comes to my speed settings, the times don't
add up to the total workout time, and the distances don't add up to
the total distance I've run the workout in. In fact, for the times, I
get negative numbers, which makes no sense at all to me. For the
speed zones, I had manually readjusted them from basically 20:00 per
mile down to 5:15 per mile, with most of the pace settings at say 6:15
- 6:45, and then one from 6:46 - 7:20; the next from 7:21 - 7:40 and
so on . . . . you get the idea. I thought what I would see would be a
breakdown of a day's run interms of how much time/distance was spent
in each of the ten speed ranges, but like I say, the numvers that I
get simply don't add up, nor do they make sense. Any suggestons would
be appreciated.

Hi,

I have just started using my 305 in the Maida Vale area of London and I
have to say that it is great. However my one dissapointment is the
level of detail of the map. It seems that when you look at the US maps
they have street names, interchanges and some features. Is it me or is
there really no detail in the London map? Any comments appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

To get that level of detail you need to purchase the Garmin base map.

I got one free with my in car Garmin Quest.

This will then be used by the Training Centre software to give
street names etc. However... it is not cheap and unless you have
another use, i.e in car SatNav, at over £60 it is a bit steep.

www.garmin.com for extra details. City Select Europe is a good one.

I bought the 305 and rather skeptically filled in the price match form.
But to my surprise I received the refund next day along with the
product by special delivery.

I did try 2 different price matches and (as they do warn you on the
site) the sneaky and stupid owners DID sneak an extra tenner on for
carriage but ONLY once you are registered on one site.

The other site did come in a little cheaper when carrige was added.

The time and hassle of typing in your personal details is NOT enough of
a burden not to throw the virtual shopping basket down on the floor and
virtually storm out in disgust to go somewhere else more honest and
transparent. If it is just the stores shopping cart software they
should change it as noone likes to be scammed at the last minute.

In a shop noone would put up with this.

Thanks for that insight. There IS a lot more than meets the eye.
I was amazed that it actually shows the full gps satellite list and
graphs the strenghts - not sure it has any actual practical benefit
though!

I would love to see heart rate bigger though. My Polar displayed the
heart rate in a variety of sizes but could not do the speed or track
the route.

Cheers Chris

Hi All,
Scratch that. Went for a walk and thought about that problem.
I guess its the GPS Sats that send time / date information.
Any way I had the 305 logging my walk, and now all date information
looks correct.

Go figure.

As ANT is really just bluetooth with bells on, and Garmin use the same

I'm looking at this set up...

Suunto/Garmin ANT HRM belt (only one belt worn)

Suunto t3/t4 on the wrist
(gimme my Training Effect and be smaller than the FR305!)

Garmin Edge 305 on the shoulder of my rucksack

So any Garmin FR305 or Edge 305 people who ALSO have a Suunto t3/t4
care to try this out for us all?!

Garmin Edge 305 on the shoulder of my rucksack
(gimme real GPS with distance and Altitude!)

So any Garmin FR305 or Edge 305 people who ALSO have a Suunto t3/t4
care to try this out for us all?!

thanks

actually when you tested your t4 ANT belt with the 305 was the t4
already paired to it?
if not then how about trying it... as the ANT is a duplex system it
may be that the t4 "turns the belt on" after which time it starts
transmitting...
wild guess I know but its all we have to go on so far, guess work

cheers

Hi. Has anybody had the following problem. When I attempt to transfer
in either direction nothing is tranferred but it says 'transfer
Complete' on the GPS. It is set to USB and no cables are loose. It
used to work but not anymore. I have had it 2 weeks!

Welcome to the club. I have my Garmin 305 for a year when it suddenly acted in the manner you describe. Their customer support coudn't help. A friend downloaded me a beta version of the softwear which works but shows my running speed at 50 kph instead of 12.
Good luck

Thanks for that.
I think the answer and solution is simple. There could be a corrupt
history or route file in the gps. The solution is to delete all items
or by one by one to see which was corrupt. My gps is with a friend and
he says that he has done the above and it is now working. I will let
you know any different. Regards, Mark

Cheers Mark

Alternatively, you could do a full soft reset... quicker, but you'd lose saved data... depends how much time you have on your hands to clear files one by one, and how important the saved history is.

hitting the start timer button is the core functionality - it marks a
segment on a particular date. if you stop the timer, then start it
again, you will see two segments in the same date, but different
"session" - don't know what else to call them. the point here, for me
at least, is that it allows me to see the total calories/miles/etc.
for a single date.

alternatively, if you reset the lap, then you get separate entries for
the same date. this means that if you want totals for that date, you
need a calculator (and and expensive watch).

if you just push the lap button once - don't hold it to reset it, it
will switch to a new lap, but same date. similar to the abovemost.

looking over this list, i don't really see any discussion of using
this watch as a training tool. maybe that's not the purpose of the
list, so please let me know.

I would like to excahnge ideas about how the data can be used to
improve my phyiscal performance. for example, I would like to see if,
after doing the same trail for one month, my highest heart rate level
goes down. or, if my heart rate recovery gets quicker over time -
this is the most accurate sign of physical improvement.

I upload my workouts to the Garmin Training Center, but it doesn't
really show much - doesn't give a lot of graphical interpretation.

i also use MotionBased, which gives more graphical representations -
still I don't see a way to examine data over a period of time.
