Pressing the STOP button - then pressing START again to recommence the session WILL put down a lap marker...
 
Pressing STOP is like pressing a PAUSE button.... the timer stops... then, when you press START again, the timer continues to count from where you left off.
 
Pressing LAP puts down a marker but does NOT STOP the clock
 
It seems to me you are doing 10 minute circuits and pressing STOP (maybe for a rest) then pressing START again.
 
Each time you do this you are putting down a LAP MARK.

If the different laps have all the same length, auto lapse is maybe on. It is possible to put that option off, of course. If not you press the start/stop or...
