Hi Rob

What exactly did Garmin tell you to do, I am having the same problem
and rather than phone them thought you might be able to relay what
thay told you.

Chris is right. No it cannot beep with each Heart Beat... just OUT OF ZONE ALARM

In fact.. we sell over 115 different HRM's and there are NONE which have this facility...

Let's face it... with an exercising heart rate of 160 bpm... it would be a pretty quick beep... :-)

I don't think it can.  You can have it beep when your heart rate is under and over values that you set.  But I see no way to have it beep with each beat.

But today, the next day, it's reading "4.22" so it looks like my Forerunner is living in the past, by a week.  Hmmm.  Too bad the firmware can't be upgraded.

Hi all.

The 4.21 is the date WEEK BEGINNING

I always use the local TRAINING CENTRE software. I don't have to be online.. and I can view all the elements that are important to me.

I hadn't actually gotten around to installing Training Center,
thinking that Garmin Connect was probably the vanguard method to log
sessions.

But after reading your post I tried T.C., and though I've only logged
one short run, I like it. It did indeed give me much better graphical
displays.

Do others gravitate toward either Connect or Training Center? Or
consistently use both?

And while I'm here, one other question. When viewing History on the
watch itself, my initial screen says on the top line: "4.21"
What is that? Is it supposed to be the date, and is somehow off by a
week? Or is it the 21st saved session of the month? (In playing
around, I may have accumulated that many, though I haven't updated
them all.

Thanks, Tris, for you earlier response!

Hi C

Thanks for the post. Tristan here... www.heartratemonitor.co.uk

I have one question... what is the data like when view on the TRAINING CENTRE software?

In the T C software, you can view data SMOOTHED or more "raw" with all the spikes etc.

Just got my Forerunner 50 a couple of days ago, and despite the low
traffic here, this is the only forum dedicated to it that I've been
able to find. If there's some other, more active, discussion area,
I'd love to know about it. But maybe we can get this one going?

I purchased the watch with HR strap and foot pod, plus the bike
sensor. Everything seems to be working great.

My biggest issue right now is with the data displayed on the Garmin
Connect site. I've only had time to upload a couple of workouts.
But I'm seeing a trend where the first five minutes or so of data
show a lot of variation in speed and HR, which I actually kind of
expect. After those first minutes though, the graphs flatten out
dramatically, even though I know my speed fluctuates significantly as
I go up and down hills, or come to stops on the bike. Is this
typical? Is there some sort of averaging going on?

While the Forerunner 50 is undoubtably going to be overshadowed by
the just-realeased 450, it's still well suited to my needs, so I'm
hoping it can develop an online following.

Now that I can download my Forerunner 50 without any problems how can
you print out the graphs on the pages?
Need to print out my heartrate on my pc with Windows Home Edition XP
but I cannot find a live icon that will allow me to do this?
As it says it is in TCX files do I need to find a special download from
the internet to allow printing of the information in the Training
Centre page.
Never used TCX files until today, any help out there for printing.

Forerunner 50 Pairing?

Having spent hours trying to get my new Forerunner 50 to download to
my pc and nearly packaged up the unit ready to send back to the
seller, I took your advice and contacted Garmin direct using their
free phone service.
Amazing I got through in under 4 minutes and a very helpful chap on
the other end went slowly through the pairing of the unit.
After the second attempt the USB stick contacted the watch unit and
the little radio icon came up on the watch.
We put in some information and "bingo" all was well and the graph
came up with my heartbeat data. The watch unit had got it's knickers
in a twist and after re-setting the unit no problem since.
One very happy chap.
Garmin were brilliant and I wish I had contacted then first before
getting very angry with the unit. If all call centres were this good
what a happy world it would be.

Thanks folks

Rob

make sure you have walked a few meters, then the foot pod will turn on.
Red led blinks once.

after that you should find the pod.

Have downloaded onto a new laptop the same Garmin 50 software and
still nothing downloads from the watch unit?
When you go into the Time mode does the small little radio icon come
up on the watch face to say that it is speaking to the USB plug in?
I assume that the heartbeat chest unit is taken off first and then
the watch unit is brought near to the USB stick to activate the unit
for a download.
Tried both software packages on two pc's with nothing downloaded from
the Garmin Forerunner 50. How simple can it be, getting really
cheesed off with this new unit.
Anybody out there who can go through the basics as I seem to be
missing out on something.

I have a problem with downloading the data from my Forerunner 50 to
my Garmin USB stick which was purchased for me as I need to monitor
just my heartbeat. I have built my own pc and had a Polar heart beat
unit but the Garmin has beaten me in the setting up of the unit to
the point of wanting to throw it out the window.
I downloaded the software as instructed and the ANT Agent icon
appears on the screen and says it is looking for the data but cannot
find any? The heartbeat icon comes up on the unit ok and when I stop
the watch and change the mode to time nothing downloads to the USB
stick?
Looked into the History file and something appears in that but again
no download? All I want is the heartbeat recorded over the working
day to download at night but do I need to set up zones with minimum
and maximum limits for the Garmin to work and download as the
pamphlet does not say.
There is nothing on You Tube to look at for the idiots who cannot
manage this equipment and the booklet is very basic for asking simple
questions about what you need to set up first in the Forerunner just
to get the heartbeat information out plus of course no disk to play
on the pc that you get with many digital cameras.

Any help in getting this unit to download data will be gratefully
received BHP and thank Lucie for her great service.
Did check Computer Pairing and the heart rate monitor did come in the
package and reads ok on the watch unit from the misses.

Kind regards

the point of wanting to throw it out the window.

Rob

Hi,

I'm a researcher who is working on a project involving elderly
walkers. We want to record how much those people walk everyday, and to
do so we will use a prototype which might be based on the FR50. I'm
gathering some information before buying the device, and that's why I
would like to ask some 'uncommon' questions:

  - First of all, can the FR50 be used to record walking (not running)
information?

  - Secondly, let's say we want to update how many meters (or miles)
those people have walked everytime they walk near a computer. Do those
people need to press any button to transmit the data? Can the watch
record a, let's say, 16 hours walking session?

  Thank you in advance,

  IƱaki

Hi John

Good question.

I have looked at this, and I don't think you can PAUSE the unit.

I have looked through the manual and had a quick play

Unfortunately, pressing the START/STOP button seems to have the same effect as the LAP button, in so far as it lays down another lap...

Unless someone tells us otherwise, I think you're just going to have to live with the short TRAFFIC light stops.

Regards,

Tristan

Subject: [garminforerunner50] Stopping & starting the watch during a run

I got a FR50 from Santa so I am still working out a few of the finer
details. During my run, I have to wait for some red lights and I
would normally stop my watch whilst I am waiting and then start it
again when the light changes. However I have noticed that this means
that I get extra laps recorded on my run. I have pre-programmed my
laps as 1 mile. For example today's run was 8 miles, however it
recorded 12 laps, and some of them are for only like a minute or two
and they were around the time of when I had to wait at lights. Is
there any way not to get the extra laps - can I pause the watch during
a run?? Thanks

Hi

Unfortunately, you do NEED to use the foot pod.

We only know this because we had some customers with the HRM version only return it... they wanted calories.

We looked in to it... and that's when we found out you NEED the foot pod

Tristan

Does the Forerunner 50 allow you to count calories burned without
using the footpod?

I would assume it would (like most HRMs) but this comment on your
website is concerning.

"Garmin Forerunner 50 packaged with Garmin's wireless foot pod lets
you track your running speed, distance and calories burned (only in
conjunction with FOOT POD)"

Also does the FR50 have input for Vo2max/OwnIndex or similar?

Cheers
Alistair

Hi

Please see the results of a test we did a while back

I have ran dozens of 10K's and a coule of 1/2M's wearing both GPS and foot pod.

Result?

No real difference, bith giving at least 96% accuracy all of the time.

The best I EVER had was the Foot Pod on a 10K road race. Distance ran 10.00 km

Remember one thing.. there is NO difference of foot pod accuracy across makes, they are ALL made by DYNASTREAM. Same technology, different outer and communicating freq to watch only.

Foreruuner 50 is here to give people GOOD value HR, speed and distance feedback, with FULL PC download. It is DEFINITELY not intended to replace the 305.

It does that really well.. there is nothing close to it for £119. The Suunto T3 with FOOT POD and PC POD costs about £180

Cheers

Tris

Conversation: [garminforerunner50] Accuracy of the foot pod?
Subject: [garminforerunner50] Accuracy of the foot pod?

How accurate is the Foot Pod device compared to the GPS used on the
Garmin 205 and 305, for measuring distance ran or walked?

For example in a 10Km race, ran at different paces, as runners tend to,
over undulating terrain, will the foot pod accurately measuring the
10Kms ran?

GPS has an accuracy of approximately 97%, although looses its signal
often, running through wooded areas or locations with tall high rise
buildings. Is the foot pod system more or less reliable?

Will the GarminForrunner50 focus our attention on improving our
performance or will it act as a distraction from doing really hard work?

Will the GarminForrunner50 continue to be used after 12 months, or will
it be put aside and gather dust, eventually being replaced by the next
gadget released, just like a child's toy?

Things to think about before, saying what the ........ and just buying
it ! ?
