To any Top 10 list of "entertainment value"
players from the Richard Whiteley era surely
*must* be added the name of GINO CORR.
In recent years (since 15 rounds contests came
in), we've seen Countdown Finals often being
dominated by ultra impressive contestants who
have been under the age of 30, or even 20.
Gino must have been about 65 or a bit older ...
and yet even at that age, he was still sharp
enough to reach the final of his Series AND
later go on reach the final of his C-of-C
(where he lost by 16 pts to Tim Morrisey).
He came across as a really likeable bloke, who
made me (and probably a lot of other people)
think "I like him, I hope he can win again."
Plus of course, he was a participant in THIS
memorable incident, which was never broadcasted
at the time - only years later ....

Both players declared that they had 7 letter words.
I haven't got the exact recording to hand, but the
way that the 2 players announced what each of their
7 letter words were went something like this:-
Lawrence : "I've got WANKERS!"
Gino : "A pair of WANKERS!"
(Gino then leans across to show Richard Whiteley
a piece of paper with the word "WANKERS" written
on it) .... :-))))
