Thanks for the info Rae.

I hope to be able to make it to George Square on Saturday.

Life has became a little busy again (no surprise there), though the reason is a first for me - I got engaged a few weeks ago and am marrying Jenny on 20th January 2007, DV,  so I've got lots to organise in the next few months.

Hi rae,

Yes, clowning is becoming a popular thing - or at least, I'm hearing about
it more and more! i think it has theological significance too - being a fool
for Christ and all that ... ?!

Anyway, hopefully you've got the notes now - sorry I probably forgot to
attach them.

Hope you're well - any nice plans for the summer? I'm off to Pembrokeshire
for a few nights next week so hoping for nice weather!

God bless,

Ele.

Related to SPEAK's other campaigns against the arms

Its between Paisley Road West and Govan Road, east of Edmiston Drive.  The Home Office compound is near the west end of the street.

If you're coming by public transport I suggest taking the underground I'm not sure which stop is closest but I think its Cessnock.  Plenty of buses go up both Paisley Road West and Govan Road.

If driving from Cumbernauld take M8 to Jn23.  At end of slip road turn right, go straight through the traffic lights (really want to turn right but there is no right turn) turn right at roundabout, take first left after Edmiston Drive joins Paisley Road West, and Brand St is at the end of the road.

Jubilee Scotland G8 Watch Day School - Dunblane 10 June 2006
I would like to advertise a day in Dunblane for activists in Scotland who
are interested in global issues.
The aim of this event is to work on the skills we need in Scotland to keep
public debate going on global justice issues, and to keep a track on what is
happening in the world as a result of the G8.
I hope that you'll leave the event feeling confident about running sessions
(or running more sessions!) at which people can find out about, and discuss,
the global issues that were so important in Scottish life last year.
The day lasts from 10am until 4pm. We will pay your travel costs to the
event and lunch will be provided. Please contact the office on 0131 225 4321
for more information or e-mail us at mail@...

There are 2 films showing for free this Friday at
Wellington Church on University Avenue. This might be
an opportunity to meet up with some people from
Glasgow Uni, although it's short notice I'm afraid.

The church website says;
International Club Friday 19th May at 7.30 pm in
Church Hall: free - ASYLUM SEEKERS' STORIES : PUBLIC
FILM SHOW OF 'DUNGAVEL' AND 'WELCOME' - the evening
will highlight what is really happening to people who
seek sanctuary in this country. An asylum seeker who
has been refused leave to stay in the UK will tell
their own real-life story - providing they have not
previously been removed forcibly from Glasgow.
Followed by discussion. Everyone concerned about the
plight of people seeking sanctuary in Scotland is
welcome to attend.

Another event, this time announced by Glasgow Campaign

"We Belong To Glasgow" Rally

at Brand Street, Ibrox, Glasgow on Saturday 17 June at

Please come to this rally and raise support for it in
your trade union, workplace, political party, church,

Hiya

Thanks Ele for coming up to meet with us again.

For films we could watch, there's;

Fourth World War (75mins) which 'weaves together the
images and voices of the war on the ground - from the
front line of struggles in Mexico, Argentina, South
Africa, Palestine, Korea......'
http://www.bignoisefilms.com/4ww/

The Corporation (3hours!! - but in 3 parts) about
social and environmental impact of corporations.
Relates well to current campaign for corporate
responsibility.
http://www.thecorporation.com/

Both are a bit activisty though so also wonder if
anyone has a video of eg Tony Campolo? There are some
listed on his website (it also mentions he'll be in
London next Feb)

For music instead of film, frenzy Christian music
festival (http://www.frenzyfrenzy.com/) sounds
interesting - apart from the £27.50 tickets!! Could be
an opportunity to do some Speak publicity though?

Any other ideas?

Rae

Thank you David and Ele for sponsoring me.

The Saturday stroll (aka 20 mile sponsored walk) went fine.  The weather was sunny and warm and once again we witnessed a small dirt devil.  We made it on to the website this year - we're about half way down the page: http://www.tomreilly.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Walk%20Saturday.htm.  I had thought they may have posted the picture of Jenny and myself doing the Gay Gordon's near Maryhill or running across the finishing line at Twechar - but then maybe they didn't want it to look too easy...  David 20 miles at 50p/mile I'm sure you capable of calculating your invoice.

Hi Guys,

Hope the fundraiser/gig thing went well last Friday night. I tell you - I wish I'd went there instead as by the time I got home from  Five asides I wasn't in a charming mood as my team fell apart:)

Still living in the centre of the universe that is simply known as Cumbernauld & commuting to Glasgow where I also now work ( accountant) for a not for profit housing organisation after my " wilderness" years in " Big Business ". Still trying to adjust to the culture but loving the flexi hours.

Brian, how'd the Saturday " stroll" go the other week ? Let me know how much i'm being invoiced for (i'll call you) & i'll pop it round sum time.

Cinema/ Film sounds great but i'm not aware of any "socially conscious" films out there at the moment...any suggestions ?

cheers

DA

Ele, it was good to meet you too.  (And David and Rae again for that matter)

Esther I'm still on the list and trying to balance the task of being interested and cut back the amount of activities I'm involved in.  I work for a not for profit organisation http://www.seemis.gov.uk/main/home.php in Hamilton as a Software Engineer writing administration software for schools.  I live in Moodiesburn, and worship in the Moodiesburn congregation of Chryston Parish Church.

Shall we try and arrange a meeting (to see a film?) before the summer?

Hi guys,

This email has become quite long so to help you navigate through it, I've split it into blocks!:
1. Hello and thanks
2. Notes/summary of our meeting last week
3. Notable date for future - Check 2 gathering!
4. Important information about the current campaign focus and its relation to you with specific representatives in Glasgow.

1. It was great to see you (and meet some of you for the first time) last week; thanks for your hospitality in various ways - putting me up for 2 nights; buying me drinks etc.and generally making me feel welcome! Glasgow is great (It feels like Manchester in a strange way)!

2. For those of you that didn't make it, I'm sorry to have missed you! :(
We talked about how the 'group' has been functioning (or not) and how to harness its potential.  We reviewed your previous decision to end regular meetings due to the fact that people have been busy, but the intention of seeing each other even ocassionally and eg. watch an informative film, has not really happened.  However there was general consensus that SPEAK still has a distinctive voice to represent in the city and amongst the older generation too!  It would be good, for example, to link up with student activity and support them eg. through prayer and telling them about local events ... hence Rachel Farr will be joining your email list! (Social Action and Missions Co-ordinator for Glasgow CU). Esther also suggested that everyone on this list says hello because it's got to the point where we don't know exactly who is on it and still interested! Is that right, Esther?

3. We also talked about how these issues relate to the wider Network: viz. as people graduate - what space there is for people to input into, and to represent, SPEAK's values and the Network. We will be discussing these issues at a one-day gathering in June ("Check 2": 24th June) so if one or 2 of you were able to come and represent your situation that would be perfect! However, recognising that it is a generous distance to make  for one day, I can take notes and relay them back to you (equally it would be good to have any points you want mentioning emailed to me beforehand). As an added incentive, Lucy Smith is having a birthday barbecue at her parent's home in Crawley the following day, and you are all invited!

4.Finally, I wanted to mention something which might be of interest to you specifically. As part of the "Alter-EU" coalition we are challenging the fact that the lobbying power of Multi-National Corporations in Brussels influences EU decision-making processes therefore meaning that their interests are sometimes placed above environmental and development concerns. This lacks accountability and transparency; we are thus calling for greater transparency in this lobbying process so that organisations lobbying for MNCs don't have priviliged access. Anyway, there are a couple of individuals in Glasgowon this coalition who are academics supporters, and I thought it might be worth you knowing of these "allies" - they might be willing to come and do talks about it, for example. See www.alter-eu.org for more info. Their contacts are:
  • William Dinan, Department of Geography, University of Strathclyde, and
  • David Miller, Professor of Sociology, University of Strathclyde.
  • I've attached the draft pdf format of the new Pray and Postcard which will be reaching your doors in the next fortnight if you wanted to have a look beforehand.

That's all for now I think! Keep in touch and let me know any thoughts/ideas/prayer requests etc.

    God bless,
    Ele.

    hello everybody

thanks Ele for the email, it was great to meet you last week.

Wanted to let you all know about a fundraiser happening tomorrow
    night:

    Fri 5th May
    Band, food, bar, DJs
raising money for North Glasgow Community Food Initiative
    8pm-midnight
at Maryhill Community Central Hall, 304 Maryhill Rd
    Tickets 5 quid on door

NGCFI is a great voluntary organisation that helps grow veg on
allotments to sell cheap - initally aimed at assylum seekers but now
expanded through community in North Glasgow, also does cookery
classes and sessions on healthy eating etc.
One of my friends chairs the trustee board and they're struggling for
    funds at the mo...
But you can help them out and have fun at the same time!
I'll be there - and Rae??! see http://www.ngcfi.org.uk for more info

    ----------------------------------------------------------------
Ok i'll do an intro as well to kick that off:

Been involved in Speak in various forms for about 5 years now. Set up
the Newcastle group whilst at Uni there. Moved to Glasgow 2 years
ago, currently working at Southern General hospital as doctor, hope
to go into GP then public health type stuff. Go to Whiteinch Church
of Scotland where I currently live, and coming to end of year
training course on Church Planting ('Invest' see
    http://www.whiteinchcofs.co.uk - they're currently recuriting for
next year - I recommend it!). Investigating church planting in urban,
poor, underchurched area of Glasgow with team through Urban
Expression (see http://www.urbanexpression.org , though Glasgow
section not up to date so email me if anyone interested in getting
involved!). Like canals & hiphop, dislike dogs and aniseed. Enough
    said!

    God bless,
    Ele.

    Hi guys,

Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday, 6pm at Mono. Thanks for the weblink to a map Rae - will help me navigate my way around the city centre!

I am wondering if any of you can help me: I am no longer able to stay with the person who I thought could accommodate me during my visit to Glasgow. Would any of you be able to put me up for a night or 2, or put me in touch with another person/family who might, for Weds and/or Thurs night? if you can only offer eg.Thursday that's a good start!

Hope to hear from you soon, and look forward to meeting some of you too!

    God bless,

    Hi all,

Aplogies for any cross-posting but I just wanted to check you're up to date with our news ... in particular to highlight the exciting job opportunities at the end of this email. If you, or anyone you know of, are interested in giving a year (or more) of your time to work for the Network Support Team - perhaps people leaving uni and not sure of next stage plans - please get in touch. The Network needs people like you in order for it to continue functioning, so please consider it (if you're able) or let others know; speaking personally it's a fantastic opportunity to learn, grow and serve the Network!

    Hoping you're well,

    Dear SPEAKers,

Hello and welcome to a network update! To those you who came to Soundcheck and the Day of Action, we hope you had a great time and have taken loads away with you that is informing and strengthening all that you do locally. There is a campaign update below so read on to continue campaigning on the very important and not to be repeated opportunity to change company law.

There’s also more info on gatherings throughout the summer, the arms trade campaign and for those of you wondering what to do next year, or looking for an exciting challenging job now, there are several opportunities to make a full time commitment to SPEAK at the end of this email.

    God bless

    1. Big Dress Campaign Update
Update - EDM 697 on Modernising Company Law:
Thanks to contact with MPs by supporters of CORE/TJM, including SPEAK members, the MPs who have signed EDM 697 on Modernising Company Law have risen from 120 at the end of January, to 211 now – well done everyone, thanks for sending your Pray & Post cards and making an impact!  The campaigning has certainly been noticed by MPs, several researchers commented that it was one of the biggest impacts in recent memory.

Keep taking action on the Company Law Reform Bill and the Big Dress Campaign:
    1. Face to face lobbying of your MP
One of the most effective ways of lobbying your MP is in face-to-face meetings.  SPEAK as part of CORE/TJM are asking supporters between March and May to arrange face-to-face meetings with MPs. If you have never done this before don’t worry, help is at hand! You can get a new MP Briefing from SPEAK and a lobby pack has been produced to help you organise a lobby – it can be downloaded/read here:
If you would like to join with others locally in lobbying your MP, please look at the TJM website, which is trying to log local lobbies http://www.tjm.org.uk/lobbies/
    1. New Pray & Post card on the EU and Corporate Social Responsibility
Look out for your new Pray & Post card in the next mailing that will arrive at the start of May.  It will focus on the ways that we need decisions in the EU to support the legal accountability of multinational companies (MNCs) and in particular the need for more transparency on how MNCs are using their influence in the EU.  Please send off the card as soon as you can and keep praying for the campaign and our impact.  If you are not on the mailing list you can join online at www.speak.org.uk/joinspeak
    1. Order more Pray & Post cards
Please continue to call on your MP to sign EDM 697 (visit http://edmi.parliament.uk/edmi/  to check if they have) and ask your friends and colleagues to do so as well. Order more Pray & Post cards from SPEAK.
    1. Reply to your MP
Many supporters have been getting ‘standardised’ replies from MPs. CORE/TJM have developed a list of bullet points for countering the statements made in the MPs letters. Please take 10 minutes to reply to your MP - have a look at the suggested replies (there are different replies for the different parties) and select the points that are appropriate for your letter and write back to your MP and/or Alun Michael who is responsible for the Company Law Reform Bill.  Visit:

Update - the Company Law Reform Bill (CLRB)

House of Lords & House of Commons

The Bill was introduced into the House of Lords on 1 November 2005 and they are now three quarters of the way through the phase where they go through it line by line and peers table amendments.  In the Lords a small group of peers has been working very closely with CORE asking questions and tabling amendments.  Most people expect the Bill to arrive in the House of Commons in May, though it is hard to predict.  In anticipation of this, CORE/TJM are developing links with MPs and building awareness of the campaign – your lobbying and actions can help this make a big impact.

    ICM Poll results
An ICM Poll on 3 April showed that nine out of ten people in Britain want the Government to bring in enforceable rules to ensure businesses minimise any harm from their operations, especially to poor communities and the environment.  The Poll, commissioned by CORE and TJM reveals voters believe company directors should be legally held to account for their companies’ impact on wider society. These views encouragingly support our campaign demands – lets make sure we build on this public support.

    2. Arms Trade Campaign Update
This year is the Defence Export Services (DESO) 40th anniversary and SPEAK’s Counting the Cost Arm’s Trade Campaign is continuing and calling for the government to mark this by shutting DESO! The January Pray & Post you received focussed on this and we’re going to be collecting signatures on huge birthday card’s to add to this petition. If you want more Pray & Post cards to give out let us know. We’ve already had a response form DESO so thanks to those who have sent there’s off. Find out more about how you can take part in the birthday card petition in Volumize that will be out in May

BAE Systems will be holding their AGM on 4th May and Campaign Against the Arms Trade are holding a demo outside. See www.caat.org.uk  for more details. A SPEAK posse will be going so get in touch to meet up beforehand.

    ********************************************************************************
    1. Big Dress Trial Tour
Two events that will help us build up for the launch of the Big Dress Tour are happening in Cambridge and Oxford this year!
    ****Cambridge 16th – 19th June **** Oxford 4th – 10th October ****
If you are interested in being involved in either of these we would love to hear from you. The local SPEAK groups will be hosting the Big Dress and to help in these locations and prepare for 2007 – 2009, we’d love for people interested in any part of the Big Dress Tour to come along.

So if you are interested in
    • hosting the Big Dress in the future
    • being part of the travelling Tour Team
    • contributing art and music and other performances
    • committing to pray for the Tour

or just want to come along

Then contact nathan@...  to find out how to get involved.

    ********************************************************************************
    1. Check 2 – Young Adults Gathering
There are a growing number of young adult networks and local groups forming across the UK - some which are connected to the SPEAK Network and others starting spontaneously.

This is an exciting gathering focussing on what you can do as a young adult to be a prayerful advocate for social change in society.
    • Hear from and meet inspiring young adults pioneering projects and Networks for change in social justice issues.
    • Look at SPEAK’s campaigns and how to connect them to your sphere of work.
    • Look at ways in which young adult s are experimenting in ways of expressing their faith and sharing it.
    • Discuss issues directly affecting young adults – the mid-twenties crisis and the pressure to achieve, behave and believe.

This is also an event of those wanting to peruse artistic and creative action for spiritual and social change on more for a professional basis as part of working life. We would really like to encourage all speak young adult groups to send one representative.

    When: Saturday, June 24th
Where: The Camden Arms, London, NW1
More info in the forthcoming mailing!

    1. Vocal Training
    Vocal Training 2006
    8th - 12th September

"Let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds. Let us not give up the habit of meeting together ..." HEBREWS 10:25

"How can I use my skills and talents to help build God's Kingdom of justice and peace?"

Vocal Training is SPEAK's in-depth summer training event and is a fantastic time when people from the Network gather together.  It's not just a chance to be trained, equipped, inspired and encouraged yourself, but an opportunity to be released to train, equip, inspire and encourage others. If you want to be a catalyst for seeing your generation rise up to pray and campaign for justice and for peace, and to share your faith, then make sure you're there!  This year a major part of Vocal Training will be preparing and praying for the Big Dress Tour in 2007 and beyond - please be there to find out more and get involved.

    ********************************************************************************

    Year Schemes

Regional Support Workers support the Network – practically and pastorally through training, spending time with them to share and pray.

Not only that, but as a Network the stories and friendships that pass between groups and regions help the network build from the grass roots and you will act as a facilitator of communication between various parts of the network. Regional Support Workers work from either Manchester of London focusing on a specific area of the country.

The year rums from September to September and is action packed all the way through.
    • help out at Freshers’ Fairs and first meetings
    • network across the region to build solidarity for the Week of Action
    • train groups in the campaigns, values and skills
    • give talks to other groups and churches
    • help to build up and mobilise for Soundcheck and the Day of Action
    • take part in the national Flower Model participatory forum and encourage groups to get involved
    • feedback groups stories and ideas to the rest of the network
    • help and support groups in their faith and expression of the values.
    • Support groups hand-on’s
    • Organise and facilitate regional forums

This is a support raising based position and is for one year but there is the possibility to stay on for longer.

The Internship is designed as a taster year in the network support team, inputting into various areas – that need you and the you are most passionate about.
    • Website maintenance and design
    • International Networking
    • Developing Campaign and Prayer  Resources
    • Developing  Group Resources
    • Arts Team
    • Giving talks
    • Developing Media Relations
    • Regional Support
    • Fundraising
    • Your own ideas!!

A great year to get experience in any of these areas!

There’s room for different ideas but the basic structure is

1/3 on your area of interest
1/3 on being involved in organising gatherings, producing resources etc
    1/3 on supporting SPEAK groups

The internship is designed as a taster year in the Network Support Team. Some people come to it with an open mind, just wanting to see where they can give to SPEAK in this way. Others come with ideas about what areas they feel most passionate about. We hope that people will continue with the areas they cover, either in the Network Support Team or as part of Flower Model.

The internship is based in London and costs £1,000 payable throughout the year and you will need to raise pocket money on top of that.

The YMCA provides food and accommodation and SPEAK pays for a monthly bus pass and extra food.

    Okay, Mono it is.
    There's a bit about Mono, including directions at;

    besteating/best_eating_dev_mono.htm
    and there's a map at;
    http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&pc=G15RB

Hope you don't mind if I also mention a meeting called
by people from Cranhill (including local minister)
following 'dawn raid' there last week. Details below.

    Have a joyful Easter

    Rae

Demo for Argavan family – Sat 15th 11:30 George Sq.

The National Theatre of Scotland used Cranhill,
Glasgow, as the location for their premiere drama
about an imaginary special forces raid on a block of
flats. Billy Boyd and Blyth Duff played a son and
mother whose house was invaded by black-clad,
    abseiling secret police.

A similar plot has been acted out in Cranhill but this
time in a real-life situation as police clad in body
armour sealed off a block of flats in Fastnet Street
while Home Office enforcers broke down the door of a
house in a dawn raid to take a Turkish asylum-seeking
family off to Yarl's Wood detention centre in London.

Hussein and Serpil Argavan family have lived in the
Cranhill housing estate for five years. Their son
Baran, aged nine, speaks little Turkish. Their
three-year-old daughter Melissa was born in Glasgow.

The Argavan family was taken to London last week and
then on to Manchester Airport but their deportation
was halted at the last minute by an intervention from
Serpil’s lawyer. The family are now back in Yarl’s
Wood detention centre awaiting a Home Office decision
about whether Serpil’s case is to be heard.

Rev Muriel Pearson, minister of Cranhill Parish
    Church, said:

"Integration has not been easy in our area, and just
when there are signs of real progress and deepening
trust, Home Office policy drives a 4 tonne truck
through the community. Many people are very angry
indeed, and ashamed that folk are made to feel afraid
and let down by our government. The family has tried
to integrate through the Cranhill Community Project
and are well-liked and respected by neighbours.
Baran’s classmates will return to school next week to
    find his place empty."

Speaking from Yarl’s Wood, Hussein said: "We were very
frightened. They started banging the door and we
didn’t let them in because we didn’t know who they
were. Then they broke the locks. We only had a few
minutes to gather some things in a plastic bag.

"Baran and Melissa are very badly affected. They are
now locked up most of the day and only allowed out at
    mealtimes."

Friends of the Argavan family, local residents,
refugees, local churches and community groups are
planning a demonstration in support of the Argavan
family in George Square on Saturday 15th April at
    11.30am.

    Hi all,

Sorry i've been out of the email loop for so long.

Part of the problem is that i tend to use a different email address
now: esthercurnock@... instead of my fish account coz i was
having trouble with that email for a while - does anybody know how i
can change it on the group thing?? think it has to be the moderator -
      ?David...

hmmm... That's actually a rubbish excuse, i've just been bad at
    keeping in touch really.

anyway would be great to meet up. I usually lead a cell on Thursdays
but i'll see if i can change it. If so i'll be there - 6pm might be
bit tight to get there from work though. personally i think mono
atmosphere is more conduicive to conversation plus more space, could
pop over to 13th note after maybe as they're opposite each other
    pretty much.

Be great to catch up with you all anyway,

    Esther
