GROW FOR IT COMMUNITY PLOT
SCOTT AVENUE, CHORLTON, MANCHESTER
Sessions on Sat 11am & Sun 2pm & Weds 5pm. Find us by following the signpost at the end of Scott Ave or walk down to the gate on the alleyway by the bridge on Manchester Road near the Leisure Centre. Wear boots/wellies, dress for the weather, bring gardening gloves!
Our long term aim is to create a vibrant, busy, educational growing area for vegetables, fruit, flowers a wildlife area, a facility for the community where individuals, schools & groups can learn about growing and gardening and become involved in allotment life, and where skills and creative ideas are shared.
Sustainable living, carbon reduction and organic growing are an integral part of the Grow For It ethos, and volunteers will have opportunities to develop, observe, and learn about such practices
We started work in 2009 on restoring the plot to make it an accessible, attractive and functional area for all sorts of activities. Over the last 3 years, with the help of many volunteers, we have developed a growing area, designed and built a shed, created paths, built raised beds for vegetables and a sensory flower border, built an apiary compound which now houses 3 bee colonies, erected a polytunnel and fences, planted a coppice and a native hedgerow and grown and enjoyed loads of vegetables, flowers and fruit. The plot is still developing and we have plenty of projects afoot – to build a dry stone wall, to install a green roof on both our sheds, to grass over and create paths in the orchard social area, and of course to attend to the new growing season.
We organize regular social events on the plot, which are attended by the volunteers and local community, and regularly host school visits. In the future we will be organizing talks and workshops on horticulture, beekeeping and cooking.
We would like to link up with community groups & other organisations interested in helping out, becoming involved or providing support and advice.
