Dear cranefriends,
Here is a short summary of the colour-ringing of cranes in Sweden in 2005:
In total, 495 cranes have been ringed in Sweden since 1985, 63 of these with
alphanumerical rings. In 2005, 63 young cranes were colour-ringed, which is
the largest number of cranes ringed during one year since we started ringing
cranes in 1985. Of these cranes, 2 were equipped with backpack
radio-transmitters; 1, in the county of Västmanland in the south central
Sweden, within the crane project at Wildlife Damage Centre (frequency
151.502). The other one has it´s origin in the county of Västerbotten,
Northern Sweden (frequency 150.691). As country codes (left leg) we have
used long red, red-white-red, red-blue-red, red-black-red and, since 2005,
red-red-white. The oldest Swedish ringed crane so far is 15 years and 240
days.
You can find more information about colour-ringing of cranes and
radio-marking projects at the website of the European Crane Working Group
www.ecwg.org. The Swedish Crane Working Group also has a website
www.sofnet.org (click on the link “tranor” on the left side). You are
welcome with questions and comments on these websites.
We are looking forward to hear about your observations of colour-ringed
cranes.
Kind regards and thanks a lot!
