Dear friends,
This one is my first message to this forum. My name is Javier Prieta
and I belong to the Spanish Society of Ornithology (SEO/BirdLife).
Last winter we have carried out a complete census of the population
of wintering crane in Spain. The result was 148.000 wintering cranes.
The census was carried out of coordinated form on the 21-23rd in
December, 2007. At this moment we are writing a book with the
obtained information. We believe that now it is a unique opportunity
to establish the total population of wintering cranes in the European
western flyway.
The information of Portugal is available for us and we have enough
information of France and Germany downloaded from Internet.
Nevertheless, we would like to possess the most rigorous information.
Because of it, we ask to whom they control the wintering areas of
France and Germany, which provide to us the numbers obtained in the
dates nearest to December 21-23, 2007.
Somebody has information about wintering cranes in Morocco?
All information will be publish in a book. From 2004 SEO publish
monographs (books) about censuses of birds in Spain in PDF. From 2004
SEO/BirdLife it works in updating the information about the size of
the populations of different birds as well as of the area of
occupation and evolution to know their status of conservation. You
can obtain other census work on http://www.seo.org/home_articulo.cfm?
id=2400 (in Spanish with summary in English).
From SEO there has been established a CALENDAR OF CENSUSES in which
are indicated the species that are going to be registered every year
until the year 2009.
