Hallo,

heute gegen 17.40 Uhr ein niedrig fliegender Trupp Vögel über Selters-Eisenbach
(Goldener Grund, Kreis Limburg-Weilburg) in Richtung WSW ziehend. Da es schon
dunkel war, konnten wir sie nicht zählen, aber den Rufen nach zu urteilen,
scheinen es nicht allzu viele gewesen zu sein.

Today around 5:40 p.m. one small flock cranes not far from the Lahn Valley
migrating WSW.

Hallo, cranefriends

We have observed ad crane WRW/RGW in SW.Finland. It is not from Czech and
Israel.

The observation is sure (distanc 140m, good light, Swarowski 60x). I would know
the origin of this mysterious crane!

As I said already below Tom is a young crane born in this spring. And
Juta, the young female who dead in Byelorussia was hes sister (a family
with 2 young). The usual distance of non-stop fly is 300-500 . The
distance from Estonia to wintering sites in Spain is around 3000 km.
The basic strategy of migration is the same in western and eastern
flyways but the wintering areas in Egypt and especially Ethiopia are
located much more far from breeding places (4000-6000 km) compared to
North Africa and Spain. A belie and hope that Tom will reach Ethiopia.

Thanks for the information Aivar, what a fantastic trip Tom is on! How old is
he?
What is the usual distances cranes fly? Is there a difference in distance with
cranes taking the eastern migration route to those taking the western route?
Keep us updated please.
Johanna

Dear Johanna and crane friends,

We have news on our satellite-cranes. One of those (the smaller young bird,
probably a female)  is dead for now.  Date of death is most probably October
21th. The bird was found out by  colleagues from Byelorussia and send back  to
us. We have got the PTT  already and will use in next year again. The other
young satellite-crane named Tom (the bigger one and probably a male) started on
migration on October 24th and flayed to South Byelorussia and stayed there up to
October 28th. On October 29th they started again and flayed almost non-stop up
to Central Turkey. At the morning October 30th Tpm was above Black Sea and
crossed it. On October 31 Tom landed in Central Turkey. From November 1th to 6th
the crane stayed in the area near Karapinari in Southern Turkey. On November 7th
Tom started again and flayed almost non-stop up to SE Egypt. He crossed Eastern
part of the Mediterranean Sea  right over Cyprus and reached Eastern part of
the Sinai
Peninsula on November 9th. And on November 10th Tom was already in SE Egypt.
This is the latest transmission point for now. The trip from Estonian breeding
place to SE Egypt is about 4000 km long.

Greetings,

Dear Collegues,

Our 2 satellite-cranes started on migration in the morning 10th October and
were last evening in West Belorussia in roost already. This indicate that
they follow an eastern flyway.

Yes, I know this website and controlled the situation one hour back. Is
there some technical problems or something other why the transmission
data are lacking after November 2th? Is the transmission interval 10 days?

Greetings,
Aivar Leito
