Orly Orbach's work is based on researched and invented myths and
rituals.
Her drawings depict enchanted worlds in which characters transform
and stories mutate, inviting the viewer to explore and interpret the
visual narratives she constructs.
The exhibition Underworlds focuses on the state of liminality,
drawing upon a collection of traditional and modern tales. The
drawings offer a glimpse into the darker dwellings of the soul, from
where it can emerge transformed.
Orbach graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2003. Her work is
informed by anthropology and theatre, and consists of drawings,
installations, art-trails, prints and publications, moving-image,
workshops, collaborations and participatory art projects. Previous
commissions include A World in a Gallery – a drawing installation
for which Orbach transformed the walls of the Anthrop Gallery into
giant pages of a colouring-in book, curating participatory art
activities for Camden Arts Centre's Spiral Festival, artwork for the
Theatre company Punchdrunk for The Masque of the Red Death and
visual design for the physical theatre company Sweet or Sour. Her
drawings are published regularly in Ambit magazine. Future
commissions include an art trail at Charleston House this coming
Easter.
