Wednesday 10th June: Hackney Cyclists and Hackney Living Street joint public meeting on borough-wide 20mph proposal

Hackney Living Streets and Hackney Cyclists are hosting a joint meeting to discuss progress on delivering the council's commitment to make all streets in the borough 20mph. This will take place between 19:30 and 21:30 on Wednesday 10th June at the Hothouse on Richmond Road in Hackney Central and is open to all. Drinks and refreshments will be provided. The Hothouse can be found a few doors west on Richmond Road of it's junction with Martello Street (the pedestrian and cycle path down to London Fields).

A default 20mph speed limit is probably the single most beneficial step that could be taken to make Hackney better for pedestrians and cyclists so were hoping for a big turn out from members.

The meeting takes place roughly a year since the council voted to work to make 20mph the default speed on all borough controlled streets and work with TfL to encourage them to do the same on the roads they control. This followed overwhelming public support as more than 600 residents wrote to councilors letting them know that 20mph was plenty for them.

As an initial step on delivering on this commitment, the Council recently outlined proposals to create 20mph limits on residential streets in a further 9 areas in the next year using traffic calmed zones. We're looking forward to them unveiling plans in the meeting for how they intend to extend coverage across the considerable remaining area of the borough. When joined with the default limit for residential roads proposed in Islington, this will create London’s largest 20 mph area.

We'll have a large panel for attendees to quiz including:
Councillors from all the major local political parties

  • The Council's executive member with responsibility for streets, Alan Laing
  • Rod King from national campaign group '20's plenty for Us'
  • Josh Hart of the national charity 'Living Streets'

Hope to see you there. Do feel to pass this on to anyone off-list who you think might find it of interest.
