Wollstonecraft Live!
Written by? Kaethe Fine
Conceived by Anna Birch and Kaethe Fine
Director / Producer Anna Birch
A site specific, multi media performance celebrating the remarkable life of Mary Wollstonecraft - radical dissenter, Britain’s first feminist, author of A Vindication of the Rights of Women, mother of Mary Shelley.
Newington Green becomes a film set as a fictional Hollywood bio- pic is made of her life crewed by three actors, all playing the title role. Extras are chosen from the audience as the story of her life is experienced through the film, her letters and prose, political writing of the time and the grief stricken narration of her husband - the radical philosopher William Godwin.
All entwine to create multi media, site specific theatre in the very church she attended and the area she lived in the 1780s. This fragmented vision of her plus the films and theatrical loops created, spar with conventional notions of narrative, folding time over and over to create a Jackson Pollock-ing of historical drama squeezed through the nose of Being John Malkovich.
Anna Birch is the founder of Fragments and Monuments, a company producing live art in non-theatre spaces since 1997 including Di’s Midsummer Party for the Stoke Newington Festival. She is a fellow of Central St Martin’s SMARTLab. Kaethe Fine is a writer, performer and award winning film maker, originally from New York.
Performance begins: Unitarian Church, Newington Green, London N16 then continues on Newington Green.
