Hackney Migrant Centre
is a new charity offering practical help and social support to recent
migrants, especially those seeking asylum here
Many people in Hackney and around the UK are facing destitution and
isolation. Increasingly savage rules make successful asylum claims
almost impossible. Some have nothing to live on while waiting for
decisions, and after, and are denied the right to work legally.
Many are vulnerable to fraudulent advisers and employers.
While Hackney is rich in refugee and migrant community organisations,
the HMC is breaking new ground. It is providing, for the first time in
the borough, an integrated centre offering information and support
regardless of a person's country of origin or immigration status.
Hackney Migrant Centre
opens on 26 March 2008, and every Wednesday from then on
12.30 - 3.30pm
St Mary's New Church Rooms
Spensley Walk, off Stoke Newington Church Street, opp Clissold Park, N16
The Centre will provide a midday meal; immigration, health and welfare
advice; space to relax and meet together and chat. We hope that English
classes and leisure activities will also be available soon.
Are you interested in getting involved in this new, essential and
exciting project? We rely on volunteers and welcome suggestions and
offers to help to make the Centre a success and to enable it to expand.
More voluntary help is needed on Wednesdays.
That includes welcoming and chatting with people coming to use the
Centre .Signposting them to the services they need.Interpreting. Looking
after the kids while their parent sees a professional adviser at the
Centre. Cooking.Clearing up..
And we need volunteers for the other tasks too which enable the Centre
to run successfully. So do get in touch if you can help out on
Wednesdays or at other times.
