Subject: HTUC: Stop the victimisation of Rick Jones and his family
This is a message from Hackney Trades Union Council (HTUC). HTUC is a co-ordinating body that aims to bring together all trade union members wanting to build a strong broad based labour movement in Hackney. Trade union branches anywhere in London with members who live or work in Hackney can affiliate to the HTUC and can send delegates. Please circulate this message to trade unionists you know who live or work in Hackney. For more information, please visit our website; www.hackneytuc.org.uk

This is an urgent request for assistance.
Ricky Jones is one of the most respected trade unionists in Hackney and is the Unison convenor for Education in Hackney. For many years, he has fearlessly represented non-teaching school-based workers, often in extremely hierarchical workplaces where the very presence of a trade unionist offends.
He is an effective organiser, and has built trade union membership and an effective stewards network which is the envy of cducation convenors across London
Ricky has worked as residential caretaker at William Patten school for 10 years
He has faced victimisation in the past for his trade union activities.
Now the school governors have been manipulated into making the position of residential caretaker for William Patten School redundant.
If this scheme goes ahead Ricky and his wife and three children) will be homeless.
The governors were given the proposals just ten minutes before being asked to make a decision. The underhand way in which this proposal was put to them in a manner which prevented any realistic consideration of its consequences is a sure sign that had they had the opportunity to consider this properly they would have thrown it out.
We need you to act urgently
1) send an email to Hackney Unison's branch secretary, Matthew Waterfall,(Matthew.Waterfall@...) to get on the campaign mailing list. Matthew will send you leaflets and petitions: please circulate widely.
2) Send a protest email to Kathryn Kyle (headteacher) kylekathryn@... and Aileen Walker (chair of Governors) aileen.walker@... to protest the decision and urging that the decision is rescinded and any proposal subject to proper consideration.
3) Attend the lobby of Governors on Monday 17 March at 6pm William Pattern School, Stoke Newington Church Street, London N16
4) Attend the public meeting on Wednesday 26 March at7pm, Abney Hall, Stoke Newington Church Street.
5) Get your trade union branch/community group to send a message of support to the campaign.
6) Casecade this email to everyone you know who believes in social justice asking them to repeat the above steps!

This is not just a campaign for Ricky and his family, it is a campaign for the fundamental human right of trade unionists to organise at work without being victimised.
Thank you for your support.
