Hope you can make it to the last Hackney Green Drinks of 2009, on your own or with friends. There's no agenda or other formality - just chatting, debating, networking and generally connecting. All are welcome and there's always a good mix of regulars and new people.

Richard Docwra, Green Drinks supporter, wanted you to know about a new 44-page booklet just published on how to have a better Xmas – ‘one with less stress, debt and waste, and with more of the things that really matter to us about the festive period, including people, fun, relaxation, generosity, compassion and the opportunity to reflect’. It’s free to download from www.lifesquared.org.uk until Xmas. Haven’t read it myself but it’s coming up to that time of year so I thought it might appeal to someone.

Video Training for Social Change

Video Citizen Journalist Training in 2009-2010

Would you like to join a network of motivated people filming their own news?

This is a network which aims to provide an independent and alternative viewpoint to traditional news organisations. visionOntv and Undercurrents are teaming up to seek people to join a 'Citizen Journalists Network'. In 2010 we are expanding our training to nurture a UK-wide network of people will be encouraged to support their local community and campaign groups by producing regular video clips about local positive news to be spread as widely as possible, as well as through the visionOntv network. We will show you how to find and produce a short news report about grassroots life within your own community, including activist events.

Throughout 2009-2010 we will be seeking to find people around the UK who will put their camcorder to good use. If you would like to become a citizen video journalist, contact us by filling in this form and we will keep you informed of our training workshops.

visionOntv Workshops

Our training programme grew from the work of undercurrents and is bold and unique. We have taken away the obstacles to making effective films by radically simplifying the whole process.

You might be like me – always taking lots of video of actions, which I will edit some day, I really will.

Or you might have no training at all in making films, but you've got a stills camera or a video camera. You shot your Mum’s birthday party, but when you showed it to her, she became strangely busy halfway through.

Or you might have a video-taking mobile phone, and would like to post stuff on youtube if only your dog would do something hilarious.

Or you haven't even got a camera – don't worry, the world of effective activist TV can still be yours!

Hi,

I am aware that on the Cazenove website we have a few people that are referred to for painting and decorating jobs, however, none of them seems to do it as a full time job (correct me if I am wrong). That is actually the person I am looking for i.e. someone who does only painting and decorating as a full time job (needless to say they should be good at it, too).

We have a very particular job for that person. Please get back to me if you know of anyone. This is actually quite urgent.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Traditionally the neighbour is free to trim back overhanging vegetation on their side, and they  may offer the trimmings to you.

Encourage your neighbours to collect the leaves in black bags and give them to you to make compost.  Put a litre of water (or urine is good) in the bags and leave them for a year at least to make a fantastic mulch.

A neighbour of ours made a complaint about some overgrowth into their garden from ours which we are happy to trim, however, I am not sure if we are obliged to do that, particularly since it can only be done from their garden. Does anyone know what the take is on that?

On another note there have been complaints from several house owners regarding some large trees in several gardens from which dead leaves fall into their garden. Are those people with the big trees obliged to cut back their trees in order to reduce the amount of dead leaves blowing about? Those trees do not interfere with anyone else garden though. I would have thought not but wanted to check if anyone is sussed up on such an issue.

Many thanks in advance for any feedback.

London's Health Inequalities Strategy Consultation questionnaire

This is the very first Health Inequality Strategy to be published for public
consultation by the London Mayor. It seeks to address the health inequalities
which prevent many Londoners from enjoying their life to the full and making the
most of what London has to offer.

The Mayor's vision is to diminish the health inequalities in the Capital by
identifying the priorities for reducing them alongside defining the roles of key
partners that can help with the strategy's implementation.

We would be grateful if you could take the time to tell us what you think about
the Mayor's proposed measures to tackle health inequalities. We encourage you
to read the full version or the executive summary of the Health Inequalities
Strategy before completing this survey.

Many thanks,
Health Inequalities Team

Hackney Empire is on of the Landmark London pin badge winners

As 1,000 days to go until the start of the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games approaches, the London 2012 Organising Committee and London Councils today announce the landmarks chosen by Londoners to feature in a celebratory set of 'Landmark London' pin badges.

Londoners had from Monday 14 September until midnight on Sunday 18 October 2009 to cast their vote from a list of nominations. Winning landmarks range from visitor attractions, theatres and museums to windmills, clock towers and bridges.

The winning landmarks by borough are:

London Borough of Barking and Dagenham: The Catch. A gateway public artwork for Barking Town Centre reflecting the area's Saxon heritage and involvement in the fishing industry.

London Borough of Barnet: The Archer Statue. Sculpted by Eric Aumonier and located outside East Finchley tube station, the archer points his arrow to the opening of a 17.3 mile tunnel running all the way to Morden.

London Borough of Bexley: Hall Place. A Grade I listed house built for the Lord Mayor of London during the reign of King Henry VIII, now houses the Bexley Museum Collection, a tourist information centre and riverside tearooms.

London Borough of Brent: Neasden Mandir Temple. Popularly known as 'Neasden Temple', The Mandir is a masterpiece of Indian craftsmanship and continues to attract over half a million visitors annually.

London Borough of Bromley: Crystal Palace Transmitting Station and Park. Crystal Palace Park hosted the great exhibition of 1851, showcasing the glasshouse with over a million feet of glass. It is the site of the BBC's main broadcast tower in London, built in the 1950s. The Athletics Stadium within the grounds hosts international track and field competition.

London Borough of Camden: St Pancras Station. When it opened in 1868, St Pancras's ironwork train shed was the largest enclosed space in the world. The Grade 1 listed building has recently been refurbished and is the jewel of the crown of the High Speed 1 railway.

City of London: Tower Bridge. Designed by Sir Horace Jones and Sir John Wolfe-Barry, the Bridge was built over the Thames in 1894. It is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world.

City of Westminster: Westminster Abbey. Steeped in more than 1000 years of history, it has been the coronation church since 1066.

London Borough of Croydon: Croydon Clock Tower. Built in 1895 as the borough's Town Hall, it now also houses the Croydon Museum and art galleries, a cinema and library.

London Borough of Ealing: Ealing Studios. One of the great names in British entertainment, Ealing Studios is famous around the world as the home to the great Ealing comedies of the 1940's and 1950's. It s the oldest film studio in the world still in production.

London Borough of Enfield: Forty Hall. Forty Hall was built in 1629. This Grade I listed building it provides a link with Enfield's past while providing the borough with an outstanding venue for many arts and cultural events.

London Borough of Greenwich: Old Royal Observatory. A monument to navigational research, this is the home of Greenwich Mean Time and is famous as the source of the Prime Meridian line, dividing East from West (longitude 0° 0' 0''). The Observatory galleries unravel time, space and astronomy; the Planetarium lets visitors explore the heavens.

London Borough of Hackney: Hackney Empire. Each Christmas a cosmopolitan, diverse audience visits for sensational shows. International opera companies, famous orchestras, leading touring productions, top comedians and musicians have all appeared.

London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham: Hammersmith Bridge. Hammersmith Bridge was built in 1887 as a replacement for the original suspension bridge dating from 1827. The present bridge was designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette.

London Borough of Haringey: Alexandra Palace. 'Ally Pally' finally opened in 1875, two years after it was destroyed by fire. Damaged again by fire in 1980, it now has event halls, a public ice rink and parklands.

London Borough of Harrow: St Mary's on the Hill. This beautiful church is visible for miles around, it has a history going back 900 years.

London Borough of Havering: Upminster Windmill. This Grade II listed building was built by local farmer James Noakes in 1803. The windmill continued to grind wheat and produce flour until 1934.

London Borough of Hillingdon: Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Centre. Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Centre will have the first new 50m indoor pool in London for 40 years.

London Borough of Hounslow: Chiswick House. Built in the mid-1700's by Sir Edward Seymour, the house is considered to be the finest surviving example of Palladian architecture in Britain.

London Borough of Islington: St John's Gate, Clerkenwell. The In the original Tudor Gate House to the Priory's English headquarters, visitors can see the Priory church and 12th century crypt.

Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea: Natural History Museum. The building was designed in 1865 by Alfred Waterhouse to house Sir Hans Sloane's extensive collection of natural curiosities.

Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames: Telephone Boxes sculpture (London Road). A sculpture by David Mach, commissioned in 1988 for the new relief road, these disused red telephone boxes have been tipped up to lean against one another in an arrangement resembling dominoes.

London Borough of Lambeth: London Eye. At 135 metres, The London Eye is the world's largest cantilevered observation wheel, with 40 kilometre panoramic views on a clear day. It has now welcomed over 30 million visitors to date.

London Borough of Lewisham: Horniman Museum. Victorian tea trader Frederick John Horniman began collecting specimens, musical instruments and artefacts from around the world in the 1860s, and the growing collection was moved to a bespoke museum in 1901.

London Borough of Merton: Wimbledon Centre Court (AELTC). Centre Court has seen a number of changes since its first match in 1877. It is recognisable the world over and recent additions include a fully retractable roof.

London Borough of Newham: Three Mills. Three Mills and its surrounding waterways is a beautiful conservation area for industrial heritage and astonishingly abundant wildlife.

London Borough of Redbridge: Churchill Statue. On Woodford Green stands a statue of Sir Winston Churchill, Britain's wartime leader who was MP for Wanstead and Woodford for 40 years.

London Borough of Richmond upon Thames: Richmond Park. London's largest park with 2,500 acres of hills, woodlands, gardens and grassland with stunning views as far as St Paul's Cathedral.

London Borough of Southwark: Globe Theatre. Performances and an education programme combine to create an international resource dedicated to the exploration of Shakespeare's work and the playhouse for which he wrote.

London Borough of Sutton: Honeywood Museum. Located by Carshalton Ponds, Honeywood dates from the 17th century.

London Borough of Tower Hamlets: Tower of London. Founded by William the Conqueror in 1066-7, this is one of the world's most famous fortresses, and one of Britain's most visited historic sites.

London Borough of Waltham Forest: Waltham Forest Town Hall. The centrepiece of the impressive 1930s Civic Centre complex by P.D. Hepworth, completed during the early years of World War II.

London Borough of Wandsworth: Battersea Power Station. A Grade II-listed building built in 1939. It was the first in a series of generators set up as part of the National Grid power distribution system, standardising the supply of electricity in England.

        -------------------

    Choice in the NHS

As the debate over healthcare rages in the US, here in the UK
the NHS is undergoing major changes – many of themm looking
worryingly like privatisation. There is a presumption from both
the Labour Party and the Conservative Party that more “choice”
gives patients a better service. As such the Government has
introduced Alternative Providers of Medical Services (APMS),
which allows Primary Care Trusts to contract out the services
they provide to a variety of health care providers –“ including
private companies. Another change is allowing patients to
choose which GP they see instead of the current system where
you must attend the surgery nearest your home.

I am in no doubt that the NHS has been vastly improved over the
last 12 years. I had my son in the Homerton Hospital in 1991.
The doctors and nurses were lovely, but there was no doubt they
were under pressure. Under a Labour government the buildings
and the facilities at the Homerton have been improved out of
all recognition. And it has an excellent record on issues like
MRSA.  Nationally we now have 89,000 more nurses, 44,000 more
doctors and 100 new hospitals. But I am deeply concerned by the
current trend towards allowing private companies to make a
profit from providing health services. Profit-making companies
may well find ways to perform a service more cheaply but the
money saved does not get pumped back into the NHS to further
improve services. Instead it goes straight into the pockets of
the shareholders. And it is important to ask how private
companies do things for less money. Very often it involves
cutting corners – with staff wages and pensions, witth
substandard practice buildings or with the standard and variety
    of services.

Currently two big healthcare centres are planned for Hackney
(the new polyclinic health centres) but there is a chance they
will be contracted out to private companies. I have written to
the Department of Health explaining my concerns over these
plans and will be meeting with the Hackney and City Primary
Care Trust. In the meantime I would welcome constituents’ views
on the matter. I have already received a number of letters
against the plans to allow private companies to run the new
healthcare centres, but does anyone think otherwise? The
argument for using private companies says that introducing
competition improves efficiency, does anyone agree?

Hi all,

Profuse apologies for this - I sent you a version of the leaflet for the 14 October lobby of the Health Scrutiny Committee with the wrong day on it.

The lobby is on WEDNESDAY 14 OCTOBER.

I have now deleted all the wrong versions of the leaflet.

Please use the one attached to this email. Apologies if you have already sent the other one around - but at least this is a good way of reminding people when the date is.

Bronwen

(have pasted in related news item - see below)

See results of Camden Keep Our NHS Public campaign on the GP-led health centre commissioned out to big commercial healthcare company Care UK.

The Camden Health Scrutiny Committee agreed to refer the issue of lack of consultation on the GP-led health centre to the Department of Health.

We have a very good case over lack of consultation in Hackney over the two new GP-led health centres - let's make sure our Health Scrutiny Committee also refers it back to the Department of Health on 14 October.Â

See names of the councillors who are members of our Health Scrutiny Committee http://mginternet.hackney.gov.uk/mgCommitteeDetails.aspx?ID=124.

If any of them are your local councillor, if you are able to, please write to them, or go to a surgery (if they hold them) and make your views known about the sell-off of GP surgeries to big private healthcare companies.

Subject: Some positive news from Camden health campaigners

Some positive news from Camden health campaigners

1. Tonight's meeting of Camden's Health Scrutiny Committee agreed to refer the issue of the lack of consultation over the proposed GP Led Health Centre in Euston to the Department of Health. The Scrutiny Committee will ask why NHS Camden say they do not have to consult because they are being directed to set up a new clinic by the DoH.

On the other hand then Minister of Health Ben Bradshaw wrote to the committee in March saying:  “We have made it clear that these developments (GP led health centres) will take place only where it is ascertained after local consultation with the public and with GPs and other healthcare professionals that they will improve patient care for local communities.”

Whilst this referral takes place, legal action against NHS Camden will be suspended, but they will be asked for guarantees that no moves will be taken to set up the clinic or sign contracts with Care UK in the mean time.

We need to take advantage that this breathing space gives us to step up the campaign. It shows that all the campaigning is worth while. (Click here for the BBC report http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8214225.stm)

2. Join the Demonstration in Brighton on Sunday at the Labour Party conference 12.30 Madeira Dri ve. Meet 10am at ticket machines at Victoria Station for the special train (Contact 07946 480 261 if you haven't got a ticket).

3.  Next Camden campaign meeting Tuesday 06 October 6.30pm Somers Town Community Centre Ossulston Street, NW1

4.  Care UK, the private company chosen by NHS Camden to run the new health centre, have been thrown off yet another residential care contract last week - this time in Islington.(See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8214225.stm )

5.  NHS Camden claimed tonight they will not tender Out of Hours services until after further consultation, (despite having asked for expressions of interest from private companies by the end of August). We need to hold the PCT to this!

6.  Health Minister Andy Burnham made a significant shift in a speech last week when he said the NHS was the preferred provider for health services, and postponed the deadline for putting community services out to tender. We need to hold the government to this! (See report below and http://www.hsj.co.uk/comment/leader/andy-burnham-speech-delivers-body-blow-to-nhs-competition-and-choice/5006602.article )
Unions force pre-election retreat from government in behind-the-scenes deal

With=2 0an election approaching the bargaining power of the unions is at its peak and they have capitalised by ringing a concession from the government in a crucial area of NHS privatisation – community health services.

In a sudden change of heart, ministers have told health unions that the NHS, not the private sector, should be seen as the “preferred provider” for PCT community services.

Community health care, such as district nursing, has become the front-line of the battle against privatisation with the Government earlier setting deadlines for PCTs to put services out to tender.

Those deadlines have now been scrapped, and in backroom talks at the TUC conference Andy Burnham, the health secretary, has assured unions that PCTs will regard the NHS as the preferred provider for those services. According to UNISON, he has also claimed that the government is not “ideologically wedded” to the private sector. UNITE are now pushing for clarification.on all market reform of the NHS.

Health unions, who along with the British Medical Association have strengthened their position by uniting once again under the banner of NHS Together, believe this is a significant change that staff and campaigners can use when pressuring pro-privatisation PCTs to not tender services in the first place. It is suggested that the burden of proof could be on PCTs to show that their own in-house services are not good enough before they can outsource20them.

The government no doubt hopes the partial retreat will head off an autumn of confrontation and pave the way for the unions to come into line for the election campaign. With manifestos being drafted policy is unusually fluid.

The NHS Support Federation believes that compared to the scale of the patchwork privatisation of the health service this is a small victory. It does not preclude PCTs from handing services over to the private sector if they want to. However it could at least slow the process in the coming nine months, but only if the unions’ efforts are backed up by local campaigning and vigilance

Hi all,

Please see notes of the last meeting.

The next stage in our campaign, following our presentation to the Primary Care Trust Board meeting on 11 September is
our lobby of the Hackney Health Scrutiny meeting on 14 October.

The lobby will be from 6-7 pm on the Town Hall steps - we want to get a good turnout, with lots of banners and placards, to show the councillors on the Committee that Hackney's community is against the sell-off of GP surgeries to commercial healthcare companies.

See poster for the lobby attached to this email - can you circulate it as far and wide as you can, and also use the front page as a poster to put up on notice boards, lamp posts, in shops, libraries, community centres etc.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a solicitor to sort out a dispute with a building company? Also, does anyone have experience in this field? What sort of cost would one be looking at? Is it effective to use the Citizen Advice Bureau or are there any other ‘free of charge’ charities that handle such issues?

Would very much appreciate your help.

Many thanks in advance.

Londoners have until midnight on Sunday 18 October to cast their vote at :

Londoners are invited to vote

Landmark London

Londoners are invited to vote for the landmark in their borough that they would most like to see featured in a celebratory set of London 2012 ‘Landmark London’ pin badges.

The ‘Landmark London’ vote is run in partnership with London Councils and supported by the 33 London local authorities who have compiled a short list of the capital’s best-loved landmarks.

Londoners have until midnight on Sunday 18 October to cast their vote at :

Landmark London 2012 Opens in a new window

Landmarks up for the vote range from visitor attractions, theatres and museums to windmills, clock towers and bridges. Some nominations may be less well-known around the world but all are equally well-loved on the local London scene. Each landmark put forward has a special resonance with the area it is located in and lends itself well to being re-created into a metal pin form alongside the London 2012 logo.

Nominations include;
  • Hampton Court Palace, London Borough of Richmond upon Thames
  • Ealing Studios, London Borough of Ealing
  • LondonEye , London Borough of Lambeth
  • St Pancras Station, London Borough of Camden
  • Hackney Empire , London Borough of Hackney
  • Lewisham Clock Tower, London Borough of Lewisham
Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee said: "Pin badges are a popular part of the heritage of the Olympic and Paralympic Movement with each Organising Committee producing a range of these collectors items that appeal to different people. Inviting Londoners to create the ‘Landmark London’ set is one of many ways people will be able to get involved in the London 2012 merchandise programme."

Merrick Cockell, Chair of London Councils said: "London 2012 is an opportunity to showcase the whole of our great city, and these pin badges are a wonderful way for Londoners to help us do that. This is their chance to tell the rest of the world what makes their borough great - from monuments to theatres, town halls or palaces."

Honav, the official London 2012 Games pin licensee, has pledged to create 2,012 individual pins to commemorate the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and to celebrate London and the UK. The 'Landmark London' set will comprise 33 individual pins to commemorate a landmark from each London borough.

The results of the 'Landmark London' vote will be announced as part of the celebrations for 1,000 days to go until the start of the 2012 Olympic Games at the end of October 2009. The pin badge set is expected to go on sale next year.
