If you read the original ME articles, then the reasoning is exactly
that - a desire to shift water into the bolier quickly without
frantic pumping - and it's also designed to have a stronger pivot
point than the traditional 'cast' design.

With regards to how hard it will be against 100psf - I'll let you
know when I've finished my engine and have to use it.

Its for the Collin/Weise Flying Scotsman. Not sure how hard it would be pumping against a 100psi boiler in a panic with that 5/8" bore ram! Nice design though....
