HI Mick,
I had the same idea, it is quite easy to do. I removed the grate and
made a brass burner tray to fit in its place, (shallow box type) I
went to a local gas fire fitter and got a ceramic block and cut it to
fit the top of the box. I held it in with fire cement. a pipe was
then fitted to the tank and positioned to the underside if the buffer
beam. this then has a gas jet and air valve fitted.(also from gas
fitter) this then went to the gas bottle regulator.
to start the fire connect the blower fan as normal and turn it on
turn the gas on and open the valve allow the gas to flow then it
should light ok through the fireing hole without and flash back. use
the air and controll valve to controll the flame and off you go. when
you have finished just turn the gas off, no more cleaning the ash out.
this is the same principles used on gauge 1 and others. just larger.
(i have not tryed it on a dyak but its all the same.
If you want to convert back to coal just slide out the burner tral
and replace the grate.
Will.
p.s. if you are lucky you could get the burner tray off the shelf to
fit, they are used a lot in boats.
