As material on this forum seems to be a bit thin on the ground I'll
give some details of my attempts to finish the Paul Wiese/Don Collin
Flying Scotsman started by my late father about 15 years ago. I've
uploaded a few photos to a new Album (John Baguleys Flying Scotsman)
and will give updates and add photos as work progresses.

I inherited the loco about 10 years ago after my fathers death and
she's lain around the house since then gathering dust looking very
forlorn.

My model engineering days started in 1973 when I started work with the
GPO (now BT) and I bought a brand new Myford ML7 from Reeves (then in
Birmingham) for £150. I started building an Allchin traction engine
but unfortunately interest wained after a few years although the lathe
etc has remained in use for various projects.

An (unfortunate?) visit with my brother to the Midland Railway Centre
at Butterley has rekindled the old spark (must be the smell of steam
and hot oil) so I have decided to start again with the Scotsman.

My father got as far as running the chassis on air and completing the
boiler. I know he had a lot of trouble with the boiler, especially the
combustion chamber which leaked like a sieve. He did eventually get it
water tight but I am not confident about its integrity so I will be
building a new replacement.

The chassis was originally built with just the two outside cylinders
but I intend to rebuild it as the three cylinder version. Castings for
the inner cylinder and the tender chassis have just arrived from Roger
Palmer (Very quick-excellent service). Materials for the new boiler
have been purchased from Reeves 2000.

The chassis has been dismantled ready for work and it's apparent that
some parts will have to be remade due to poor fits etc. The middle
wheelset will have to be split to accommodate a new axle and inside
crank assembly and a few more holes drilled in the frames for the
inside cylinder.

That's progress so far and I'll give updates as and when there is
something to report.

John
