Hi Tony,
Tee Publishing can (or could) supply a copy of the original building
instructions by F J Camm and the Association plans service (Peter Shaw
- 01252-614188) have some of the original drawings I believe.
You should be able to get the boiler tested by your local model
engineering society as they usually have their own testers. The fact
that it is meths fired shouldn't matter?
The existing water tube boiler could possibly be converted to butane
firing without major alterations. This would be much cleaner and
easier to control than meths. Paul Wiese and Derek Collin described a
gas fired water tube boiler for their version of the Scotsman in Model
Engineer no. 3701 (18th March 1983) which uses a standard Primus
burner. The gas supply could be carried on a seperate trolley behind
the tender or fitted in place of the meths tank in the tender.
Converting to coal firing would obviously mean a complete new boiler
and a lot of work.
I think the B L version was only really intended for a 'scenic'
railway although I remember someone telling me that they had converted
one to make it suitable for passenger hauling.
I don't think you will get a regulator 'off the shelf' that will fit
but could probably get a one off made if you are not able to do it
yourself. The one descibed in ME for the water tube boiler is only a
very simple screw down valve.
I am sure that others will chip in with advice as there seems to be
quite a lot of the B L Scotsmans about in various stages of
construction.
