Mick:
I use Welsh Steam Coal from Signal Fuels for my narrow firebox 4-6-0
with great satisfaction. The size I use is "Grains," (roughly 3/8")
which seems about right. The fire can be maintained quite easily
compared to anthracite, in fact if there is one disadvantage to the
Welsh coal, it is that it burns too hot, making it difficult to keep
the safety valve from discharging continuously.
Signal delivers at no charge to major exhibitions; they advertise in
EIM. You are fortunate, should you decide to buy from Signal - it
cost me ten times as much to ship the coal to the U.S. as the coal
itself cost. But it was worth it!
