John:
I am also a new member but never really introduced myself. I have engines in
various scales including 1/2" scale so signed up for this site. For 2.5" gauge
I have a German based 4 cylinder Atlantic that I am restoring. I am planning on
building a dual gauge (gauge 1 and 2.5" gauge) track in the yard this summer so
I can run my two gauge 1 engines and the Atlantic.

For your gauge 1 interests, I would suggest you look at the Gauge 1 Model
Railway Association (G1MRA). They are an outstanding group of guys and have two
gauge 1 designs that they sell. Granted they are British designs, but I tend to
like that kid of thing.

I know what you mean about speed. I have an Accucraft Ruby which tends to run
rather fast if not loaded down with a loaded train. At some point I'd like to
pick up an Accucraft Shay. For a very reasonable price you can have a fantastic
Class B shay, or for a bit less you can have a nice 2 cylinder version. They
also make a nice mogul. While gauge 1, they tend to be close to 1/2" in scale.

I nearly bought a nice 1/2" 4-6-0 on ebay last week. It was beautiful, but just
a bit out of my price range. There are two sites in the UK that sell part built
steam engines, some of which are 1/2" scale. Some are reasonably priced.
Again, though you have to like Brit engines. If you search for LBSC, the sites
come up via google.

Oh well, hope that helps a little,

Hi All:
Just found this group and asked to join. I have been both playing and
working with steam for a long time. I have built LBSC's Virgina in 3-
1/2 inch gauge and have about 400 feet of track in my back yard. Also I
was a design and start up engineer in central power plants. (80 psi in
the Virginia and 1000 psi at the last plant I worked on, quite a
difference)
Would like to build an O or 1 gauge model also to run in the back yard
and would be thinking of a geared locomotive to avoid excessive speed
on the track.
