Will: Another thing to check. Are you losing steam through a leaky or
baddly adjusted valve? If you have a valve motion where you can "link
up" that is adjust the amount of each stroke the valve remains open
perhaps you should adjust the "Johnson bar" as soon as the wheels start
turning. Also check for steam leaks through packing glands etc.

What kind of fuel are you using? If coal make a deep burning bed right up to the bottom of the fire hole. The way I start is with some charcoal briquettes...

Hi Will, This is a not an easy question to answer at a distance and could be any combination of a number of things. I presume we are talking about a 2½" loco....
