HELLO AGAIN-
Forgot food and bedding
Bedding- stay away from pine shavings and cedar- both are too aromatic and bad for their noses, very irritating
--Aspen shavings or "care fresh"- paper bedding that is recycled and biodegradable. I use the "White" "Care-fresh" because it's really clean and has no scent.
I use a mix of aspen on the bottom and put care-fresh around for bedding use and stuff some in their houses.
Food- pellet \ lab blocks: are a good source of nutrition and vitamins. I usually feed one block a day (depends on size of block/pellet) along with fresh veggie or fruit: carrot, corn spinach, apple, blueberry, green bean etc.
never iceberg lettuce or any that doesn't have any real nutritional value- water content too high and gives them diarrhea.
You can purchase grain mix at most pet food stores, go for the better quality ones,
don't do a dis-service to your pet by buying the cheapest bog on the shelf.
--Fresh water everyday, fresh food every day and a clean cage will give you a happy healthy pet for a long time.
I also go to local health food store and buy different grains in the bulk bins they have and make my own grain mixture and supplement that with lab-blocks and fresh veggies
TIP ON PRE BAGGED FOOD:
animal foods don't have to pass the same standards as food for human consumption- so I put my bagged food in the freezer for 24hrs before I feed any little ones.
This kills anything that may have "hopped a ride" in the bag.
I currently have 8 Golden Syrians (Teddy Bear types) laboratory rescues
one Dalmation (black/wht bands) shelter rescue
and 2 Dwarfs with mother brought back to pet store:
all doing well.
Good Luck

HELLO-Depending on the age, I always recommend a Golden Syrian for first timers. They tend to be larger and easier to handle-love wheels and balls.Try a local hamster club or maybe rescue group- some receive alot of hamsters with or without litters that need homes.#1 is the more you handle them the more they bond with you and actually look forward to their human time- running to the door or corner of cage when they hear your voice.I recommend wire cages. they offer better ventilation, easier to clean and you can add toys, shelves, ladders etc....any questions let me know I'd be happy to help.RENE

I've had many hamsters in the past and this one is definitely the most friendly. Feed them a good hamster food mix, they will eat veg and fruit (not oranges and definitely NOT LETTUCE). They love the little choccy drops you can get, there's various treats etc you can buy for them also.I have a habitrail for one of my hamsters but I think the cage with the bars is definitely better.Good look.Trace
