Hi Everyone.

I have just jopined this group and need some advise. Does anyone know
how to help hamsters climb up and down the tubes in Rotastak cages. I
have a winter white and i put her in a Rotastak cage and she keeps on
falling down the tubes and cant seem to climb back up (or she gets half
way and falls.) I tried the ladders but she still seems to fall. Any
ideas? Or is it something she will learn to do in time?

Mandy

Hi Mandy

Welcome to the group.

In my experience, Rotastak systems are better for Syrian hamsters.

Most of my smaller hamsters (including winter whites) really struggled with the tubes and I found they were happier if I gave them a big tank with lots of toys instead.

You could try ramps, ladders and toys to jump on top of, maybe in time she will get better at the tubes, but it would probably be easier for her if you just linked them horizontally.

Hi
Thanks for that, well i have given it another go and see how she
does. Its a bit annoying as the people in the pet shop told me it
would be fine but i dont think they knew what they were talking
about. It cost me £60 so i think all they wanted was the sale. I
will let you know how she gets on this week.

Thanks

Mandy

Hi,
Just wondering if I could introduce myself to the group please?
My name's Cathy and I am way up in the North of Scotland. I run the Pet-Tacular Rescue Centre and we look after small animals until we can find new homes for them. We've no hamsters at the moment but we often get them in, our last, Brenda finally found a home 2 weeks ago, I'm sure it won't be long before w have more in.
If you'd like a look our website is www.pet-tacular.co.uk and if there's anyone else from the North or if any of you ever come up this way the animals would love to meet you!
Thanks Cathy x

Hi Cathy welcome to the group.

Are you on the BHA register of breeders and rescuers?  That could be useful.

You can get a marker on this map.  It can be useful keeping in touch with the clubs.

Hi Cathryn,

there's a great site called Petstreet. It's a great place to advertise what you do & it's free. There are quite a few rescue centres on there already but none in Scotland. Here is the site address. Have a look & see what you think.

Hi, I'm new here. I just got my hamster, Tribble. Due to my inexperience I am
open to all suggestions and advice. I just think she is the cutest creature!
I am upset with the pet shop because they sold me a cage that is almost
impossible to put together, so a friend of mine and I were up until 4:30 last
night trying to get it all to hold together. We took a few hours of zzz's and
back at it. Finally I had to take it back to have one of the staff to build it.
I'm angry because Tribble got really needlessly stressed. I had to keep her in
those balls that they can run around in (with a little blankie). She bit me
with those wicked fangs of hers and wow, I had blood everywhere. Poor hammie.
She's eaten and had water but she's been sleeping all day and all night. I'm a
bit worried about her. I was told not to handle her for a week. She was
incredibly friendly in the pet shop so I know she is stressed to the max now. I
covered her play room with a cotton cloth to keep it nice and dark. Now she
doesn't go in the main cage. Perhaps when I leave the room and go to bed she'll
venture out to eat and drink. I am so happy to have her! I'm reading about
hamsters so I can give her a nice life being cuddled and watched.

Welcome  - I am tickled with my hammies - they are addictive so be careful- what kind of cage did you get?  Do you have a picture?  She sounds like she was not a happy camper- leave her be for awhile and see what happens- talk to her - they do respond to your voice- my newest one ( yet unnamed)  for the first few days never slept but she settled into the sleep all day run all night routine quite nicely- it will take her awhile to find the whole cage - I had a critter trail till I switched  to tanks - and my first hammie named Betty who I just realized is a BOY - oh well- we call her Betty Bob - anyways there was this wonderful high tube to climb with an awesome look out but she went up it once and never went in it again - looked like fun to  me - keep us posted and have fun Linda

We took a few hours of zzz's and back at it. Finally I had to take it back to have one of the staff to build it. I'm angry because Tribble got really needlessly stressed. I had to keep her in those balls that they can run around in (with a little blankie). She bit me with those wicked fangs of hers and wow, I had blood everywhere. Poor hammie.
She's eaten and had water but she's been sleeping all day and all night. I'm a bit worried about her. I was told not to handle her for a week. She was incredibly friendly in the pet shop so I know she is stressed to the max now. I covered her play room with a cotton cloth to keep it nice and dark. Now she doesn't go in the main cage. Perhaps when I leave the room and go to bed she'll venture out to eat and drink. I am so happy to have her! I'm reading about hamsters so I can give her a nice life being cuddled and watched.

Hi, I'm new here. I just got my hamster, Tribble. Due to my inexperience I am open to all suggestions and advice. I just think she is the cutest creature!
I am upset with the pet shop because they sold me a cage that is almost impossible to put together, so a friend of mine and I were up until 4:30 last night trying to get it all to hold together.
