Hi,
We have changed the date of next training day at Stoke Mandeville from June 6th
to May 30th due to a conflict with the date of the 1st race of the British
Cycling Disability race series which is on June 7th at Salt Ayre, Lancaster.
So the training day on June 6th at Stoke Mandeville is CANCELLED. For those who
are planning to take part in the Tour de Vale ride on June 7th, I have kept the
rooms reserved at the lodge and will send out a separate message about this.
So, on May 30th, there will be a track session in the morning and a road ride in
the afternoon. Lunch will be held at 1pm. The morning session is also open to
anyone wanting to try handcycling for the 1st time. Please remember to bring
your isotonic drinks and energy bars/snacks for carbohydrate intake.
Paul Smith and his colleagues at Greenwich University need to complete a reseach
study by the end of June and so the morning track session is going to be used to
carry out the study. For the study, Paul requires 10 volunteers, male and
spinal cord injured, to undertake a 1 hour time trial. Handcyclists with other
disabilities are welcome to take part as well. Full details of the study are
given below.
You are required to arrive at the track for 9.30am
For the afternoon, a group ride has been planned.
Please contact me (ml.handcycling@...) and Paul (psmith@...) to
confirm your attendance. Please confirm if you want lunch - cost of lunch is
£4.
Unfortunately there is no accommodation available for this weekend. A junior
European basketball championship is being held at Stoke Mandeville on this
weekend and all the rooms have been booked already. Sorry about this.
I hope you can come along for the day and support Paul in his research project.
Best regards
Matthew Lindley

Hi Matt,
I've confirmed the arrangement for the track session on the Saturday morning
with the guys at Greenwich and we're planning to get the riders to complete an
hour's worth of riding (time trial) around the track – I know this is not ideal,
but it's the best we can do with what we have. In terms of what data we'll need
to collect, is consists of the following:
1) All participants will need to provide informed consent and complete a
physical activity readiness questionnaire;
2) We'll monitor HR throughout the TT using recordable watches;
3) Participants will also need to provide a rating of perceived exertion
throughout exercise;
4) We'll collect a 1 ml saliva sample before, immediately after and 1-hr after
exercise;
5) We'll collect a 10 ml blood sample before, immediately after and 1-hr after
exercise;
6) We'll have to make a valid estimate of distance covered by all riders during
the 1-hr TT.
I envisage that we'll be setting riders off at 3-5 min intervals, so we can keep
track of what's going on with laps completed, time taken to complete sets of 10
laps etc. All of the participants for the research study have to be male and
spinal injured, but other individuals can also participate for their own
interest if they want. All riders will need to get to the track for 09.30 so
that the necessary preparations can be undertaken. I'll be able to explain point
3 (above) to the riders on the day. From the point the riders complete the 1-hr
TT they will have to sit quietly for an hour before we collect their final
saliva / blood samples. In terms of drinks, participants can consume as much as
they like during the TT, but not within 10-min of providing a saliva sample.
Cheers,
Paul
