You can set the sort order of messages? Just click on the link in the date column. Your preferences will be remembered, so you don't have to do it again when you return.
I can see the benefit of such badges but I'd cringe if I had to wear one myself. I guess I'd feel a bit goofy wearing one but my hearing aids are obvious...
