Subject: Pinner Fair

Long time, no hear...Hellooo, is there anyone
still out there?
Anyway, I have been told you have a
bank holiday on Monday over there, in the UK. I was
trying to think what it was for and the only thing I
could think of,would be Whitsun. Is that right? So,
whitsun got me thinking and I seem to recall that Pinner
Fair used to be on the Wednesday of Whitsun week. I'm
interested to know if the fair still comes every year.
Growing up, it was always a huge deal to me and then as a
teen...an even bigger one because we would hang out at the
pub (I forget the name...was it the George?)right in
the middle of the High street. I remember this pub
and the fair, would be a place to get together and
bump into people you hadn't seen for ages. Whereas
normally people kept to their own "turf" (ie: the north
harrow boys drank at the headstone: the Wealdstone lot
at the Case etc.) the fair would bring all the
different groups together and while there was usually some
fight or disagreement during the evening, it was a real
coming together of people.
Maybe, I'm romanticising,
due to the fact that I'm really homesick these days,
but I do have very fond memories of that one day of
the year.

Na, you're not too old...we're all pretty much
middle aged in here.
How long since you left the
Harrow area? What "dives" in Harrow did you frequent as
a teenager/coming of age young man ?
I'm sure if
we polled the group, there would have been at least
one time when we were all in the same place, at the
same time...probably Tudors, no doubt.
Anyway,
welcome to the club...

Have any of the members watched "Blue Peter"
recently? Awfully strange question, I know-but my 13 year
old is auditioning for a part in a new kids TV show
on the BBC and the questionaire asks specifically
why he likes Blue Peter and what he would do to
change it. My answer would be based on the memories of a
39 year old, who can only recall John Noakes and his
dog Skip (?)(some sheepdog, anyway)...Valerie
Singleton, some other chubby bloke and a fat labrador.Oh,
and I also remember John Noakes slipping in Elephant
poop...or did I just see that years later in one of those
"blooper/outake" shows?
Anyway, can anybody tell me...is the
format still basically the same? Do they still have Blue
Peter appeals, where you save up all your silver milk
bottle tops to buy a guide dog etc. Do they still give
away Blue Peter badges? Are they still showing you how
to make Christmas decorations out of empty bog
rolls?
So, what is it, a teenage boy, in this day and age,
would like about the show? And how could they change
the programme to make it better?
Answers on a
postcard, please...

Well, I received the phone call yesterday, from
my cousin (along with numerous emails from friends
in the UK...) that drunken Lisa pulled the trigger
and shot Phil Mitchell. It's rather unfortunate that
over here in the US, Mel and Steve aren't even back
from honeymoon yet...but if I hadn't been told, I
probably would have cheated and looked on the internet,
anyway.
So, my point is...was it really that big of a deal in
England? Did the media really hype it up?
I think I'm
probably only one of a handful of people who watch the
show over here, so obviously there was no media
coverage at all.
To be perfectly honest, if I still
lived in England, I probably wouldn't bother too much
with watching Eastenders, anymore (the first year or
so was much better than it is now...)but it's like a
link for me, sad little ex-pat that I am...
I used
to watch Corrie Street religiously, too-but the
Canadian Satellite that broadcast it, disappeared about 3
months ago. Does anyone feel like filling me in on what
I've missed? (or indeed, does anybody even watch that
show anymore?)Anyway, I think the last time I saw it,
Jim was in prison for murdering that drug
dealer/generally villainish bloke..and Jim's old slapperrish
ex-wife Liz, was back in the street.
Has anything
interesting happened since then?

I wonder who this Martin bloke is then? Didn't
Doug Thompson have some weird medical ailment, like
Arthritis in his eyes or something? I wasn't that friendly
with Terry, but I knew his little brother Rob. As for
Gonzo...I would love to know what he has been up to all
these years. When I was "seeing" him, he still lived
with his Mum in Harrow Weald/Stanmore. I haven't seen
any of these people since about 1982. God, that's
almost twenty years. They are probably all old men, by
now! Mind you, I'm no spring chicken, either...

Just had a brief "flashback". With regards to
Stevie Waites...did you ever know his sister's
boyfriend-Gonzo (John Gonzales)? Or some little scottish bloke
(pretty "buff" for his size, I recall...) called Eddie? I
remember that Paul Angeletta used to be a barman at the
Gateway and that his brother Martin, had a glass eye.

I'm sorry you had to go through that...however,
I'm confused. As far as I knew-there were no girl
passengers...just Martin. The driver-Nicky Sweetman...had "bolted"
from the scene, leaving Martin on his own. The police
picked up Nicky at his house, hiding in bed, covered in
broken glass, with his tongue bitten in two-still
denying he had anything to do with it. It took two days
before he was man enough to admit anything, despite all
the evidence.
How am I so sure? Because I am
ashamed to say-I was his girlfriend at the time.

Somebody reminded me today that the Target at
shaftesbury circle was once called the Bird's Nest...I had
completely forgotten. Did any of you ever go there? I was a
regular for a time, especially when the club was known as
the Target.
I also remembered that a boy called
Alan Johnston was killed coming home from there. I
can't remember all the details, but I think his car was
hit by a 140 bus. Anyway, he went to St.Anselms and
would have been a year or so ahead of me. Very
sad...This must have happened around 1981/1982...I'm not
sure what secondary school he had attended...St.Greg's
maybe?
When you are young, you believe you are invincible and

I'm still haunted by that. I would have been about 17

the saddest thing I've ever had to attend. St.Josephs
was just packed to the hilt.
Sorry to be so

I sincerely hope not - It's been fun seeing what
you all have been doing. I was in Harrow over
Christmas with my family, seeing parents and friends. Went
for a drink with some (Old Salvo) mates in the White
Horse at the foot of Harrow Hill, behind the Half Moon
(?). Nice to drink Fullers London Pride again, but I
haven't seen Chiswick Bitter for some time. You can't get
it in Bournemouth.

Went to the Dome on the
Saturday before Christmas - I had been putting it off all
year, but my wife eventually persuaded me to take the
children. Not as bad as I expected - not Alton Towers, but
still an enjoyable day out. Glad I went, if only to
have an opinion based on experience! Next time we're
in London, it's the Eye!

Has anyone been? Any
