Hi folks,
Have a look at this website - Forvo.com. It's the first Web 2.0 that I've seen
for
pronunciation, and since Web 2.0 is the in thing at the moment there must be
some way
of using it. It is a bit limited as it only deals with single lexical items at
the moment, but in
principle you could upload phrases.
I've been trying to think of ways of using it for classes. Not got very far!
Option 1: Get students to research pronunciation of a set of words. Problem is
that that is
very Web 1.0 so a normal online dictionary would probably work better.
Option 2: Get them to request words that they want to know. Only problem is that
there
doesn't seem to be enough movement on the site, and they might not get any
responses!
Option 3: Get a group to upload their pronunciation of words. Now that's a bit
radical -
Web 2.0 for ELF pronunciation.
Option 4: Find other foreign language groups that are learning the first
languages of your
class and get them all asking and uploading... Trouble is there's no social
aspect to the
Forvo, so this would probably work better on Babbel (babbel.com). But Babbel is
limited to
4 languages.
Anyone got any other ideas?
And in a wider sense, how can we use Web 2.0 applications for pronunciation in
EFL?
Alex.
